Four days give you enough time to explore Chongqing's skyline, ride the mountain metro, and take a full day trip to Wulong or Dazu. A fifth day adds historic guild halls and south bank river views. These routes match three or four hotel nights so you can plan around your flights.

Map · Sights

Start with one city base

Stay near Jiefangbei (解放碑) or Xiaoshizi (小什字) to walk to dinner and evening river views. Keep the same hotel for your city nights, with a separate booking if you choose one night in Wulong. Compare the areas to stay and hotel choices before booking.

Nanbin Road suits travelers who want open river views from their room. It requires crossing the bridge or river to reach northern city sights. Guanyinqiao offers great shopping and late dinners, but requires more metro rides to reach old streets in Yuzhong.

Four days and three nights

This schedule gives you two full sightseeing days between arrival and departure.

Day Morning and afternoon Evening
1 Arrive, check in, and walk around Jiefangbei Dinner, then Hongya Cave
2 Three Gorges Museum, Liziba, and Ciqikou Hotpot near your hotel
3 Full day trip to Wulong Three Natural Bridges, or Dazu Return to your city hotel
4 Shancheng Alley if your flight allows Departure

For four full sightseeing days, keep arrival and departure outside the plan. Use one day for Jiefangbei, Hongya Cave and Shancheng Alley; one for the museum, Liziba and Ciqikou; one for Huguang Guild Hall and the south bank; and one for Wulong or Dazu.

Five days and four nights

Day Morning and afternoon Evening
1 Arrive and settle in around Jiefangbei Hongya Cave
2 Wulong Three Natural Bridges, or Dazu Return to the city
3 Huguang Guild Hall, then Longmenhao and the south bank Nanbin Road river views
4 Three Gorges Museum, Liziba, and Ciqikou Hotpot dinner
5 Shancheng Alley morning walk Travel onward

Want to see both Wulong and Dazu? Visit Wulong on day 2 and Dazu on day 4. On day 3, visit the museum or Huguang Guild Hall before heading to the south bank. Move Liziba to your final morning if you have a late departure, and skip Ciqikou. This setup gives each UNESCO site its own day with a city day in between.

Your arrival evening

Drop your bags at the hotel, explore Jiefangbei, and grab dinner nearby. A bowl of Chongqing noodles (重庆小面) is quick and filling. Our street food guide details the best local dishes.

Head to Hongya Cave (洪崖洞) after dark to see the illuminated wooden stilt houses along the Jialing River. The Cangbai Road entrance is on floor 11, while the riverside entrance on Jiabin Road is on floor 1. Check the Hongya Cave walking guide to pick a route with fewer stairs.

If your flight arrives after 22:00, get dinner near your hotel and visit Hongya Cave on another evening. If your flight lands before dawn and you want to sleep on arrival, book your room starting the night before and tell the hotel your late check-in time.

A city day: museum, Liziba, and Ciqikou

Start at the Three Gorges Museum (重庆中国三峡博物馆) around 09:00. Spend about two hours exploring regional history and Yangtze River culture, then view the Great Hall of the People across the public square.

The museum's permanent displays are free. It opens 09:00–17:00 and closes on Mondays except national public holidays. Advance booking is no longer needed; bring your original passport. Swap this city day with another day if it falls on Monday.

Next, take metro Line 2 to Liziba (李子坝) to watch the train pass through the eighth floor of a residential building. Spend 30 to 45 minutes at the viewing platform across the street. Take Line 2 to Daping and transfer to Line 1 for (磁器口).

Spend the afternoon walking the stone lanes and visiting tea houses in Ciqikou. The main street has snack stalls, while side alleys offer quieter courtyards. Check the Ciqikou guide for walking tips. For dinner, pick a place from our hotpot restaurant guide.

A culture day and the south bank

Huguang Guild Hall

The yellow exterior walls, historic courtyards, and carved wooden opera stages of Huguang Guild Hall (湖广会馆) reflect Chongqing's trade and migration history. Plan to spend 60 to 90 minutes here. Adult admission is CNY 32 (≈ USD 4.8 ).

Use the Huguang Guild Hall map point to find the riverside entrance on Changbin Road, or walk down from Xiaoshizi station. Our museums and history guide provides more background on the site.

Longmenhao and Nanbin Road

Ride metro Line 6 across the river to (上新街) station, then walk to Longmenhao Old Street (龙门浩老街). Its restored brick terraces offer clear views of the Dongshuimen Bridge and the Yuzhong skyline.

Spend the afternoon browsing cafes in (下浩里), then walk along Nanbin Road (南滨路) for sunset views over the river. Longmenhao and Changjiahui are separate riverside areas; take a short taxi ride between them if you want to visit both. Our photo spots guide highlights the best viewpoints.

You can also take the Yangtze River Cableway across the river instead of the metro. Read our cableway guide to check wait times before adding it to your afternoon.

Choose your day out

Wulong: stone bridges and a canyon walk

Choose Wulong for towering natural limestone arches and deep green gorges. Focus on the Three Natural Bridges (天生三桥), which takes about three hours to walk.

To go on your own, book high-speed rail from Chongqing East (重庆东) to Wulong South (武隆南) via China Railway 12306. From Wulong South, take a local transfer to the Xiannüshan Tourist Center (仙女山游客接待中心), followed by the park shuttle to the canyon entrance. Account for both train and local mountain transfers when planning your day. The Wulong transport guide breaks down each step.

To leave the transport arrangements to someone else, consider a Wulong day tour.

Dazu: cliff art with time to look

Choose Dazu for Buddhist rock carvings and detailed stone reliefs of historical daily life. Focus on the main Baodingshan (宝顶山) site, which takes about three hours to tour. Beishan (北山) is a separate carving site nearby for visitors interested in intricate Buddhist statuary.

If traveling independently, take the fast train to Dazu South (大足南), then take a bus or taxi to the ticket center. The Dazu guide covers ticketing and transfers.

To leave the transport arrangements to someone else, consider a Dazu day tour.

Spend one night in Wulong

If you prefer mountain scenery over an extra city culture day, use this five-day overnight split.

Day Plan Overnight
1 Arrive and visit Hongya Cave Chongqing
2 Travel to Wulong, visit Three Natural Bridges Xiannüshan town
3 Visit Fairy Mountain or Longshuixia, return to city Chongqing
4 Museum, Liziba, and Ciqikou Chongqing
5 Morning walk and departure Travel onward

Stay in a hotel in Xiannüshan town near the tourist center for easy bus transfers. Ask your Chongqing city hotel to hold your large suitcases between stays, and carry a day pack. Fairy Mountain features open grasslands, while Longshuixia features narrow gorges and waterfalls. This option replaces the trip to Dazu.

If you prefer wooden stilt houses and river scenery, replace days 2 and 3 of this plan with two days and one night in Gongtan (龚滩古镇). Visit the stone lanes and Xiqin Guildhall on day 2, then choose a Wu River boat trip or Wu Guanzhong Memorial Hall on day 3 before returning to Chongqing.

Your last morning

Spend 60 to 90 minutes exploring Shancheng Alley (山城巷), located at this map point. The hillside lanes offer historic brick houses, cliffside walkways, and river views. Visit before hotel checkout so you can store your luggage at the front desk.

For an early flight, head directly to Jiangbei Airport. For an evening flight, stick to a walk and lunch near your hotel rather than crossing the city. If your flight leaves just after midnight, head to the airport the evening before. Check our airport transfer guide for subway lines, taxi advice, and terminal information.

Booking and practical tips

  • Book flights first, then match your hotel reservations to your arrival and departure dates. Reserve your Wulong or Dazu day trip in advance before filling in free evenings.
  • For a cost comparison, add three or four hotel nights, city meals and transport, then the outing. Compare the full tour total with rail, road transfers and admission. The travel budget guide gives CNY price ranges.
  • Schedule outdoor canyon walks on the clearest day of your stay. The Three Natural Bridges route includes steps after taking the elevator down. Travelers who need step-free routes can consult our accessible travel guide.
  • Plan meals near your daily route. For meat-free or halal dining, read our vegetarian and vegan guide and halal guide and notify your tour operator ahead of time.
  • Configure digital payments and mobile data before departure. Save the Chinese names and addresses of your hotel and train stations on your phone for navigation and ride-hailing.
