Start around Jiefangbei

Jiefangbei (解放碑) serves as Chongqing's primary central shopping district. Modern department stores, brand boutiques, and coffee shops cluster closely around the central Liberation Monument. This flat pedestrian zone makes it simple to shop for clothes, cosmetics, or everyday items between sightseeing walks.

Most brand stores and department stores display fixed prices. When buying from smaller market stalls, ask how much something costs (多少钱). Check the final total on the card reader or QR screen before completing payment with your digital payment app. Ask for an official tax receipt (发票) if you purchase electronics, high-end designer goods, or items eligible for tourist tax refunds. If weather gets too hot or wet, air-conditioned malls also offer a comfortable rainy day activity.

  • Umbrella: visit MINISO LAND (MINISO LAND重庆解放碑店) in 2077 Cyber City at 民族路166号2077赛博城市. Pick one up while shopping around Jiefangbei.
  • Phone cable or charger: head to Xiaomi Home (小米之家解放碑大融城店) in Yingli Darongcheng, level LG, unit 05B (民权路26号英利大融城LG层05B). It pairs easily with a walk through Jiefangbei and street snacks on Bayi Road.

Pair Raffles City with the rivers

Raffles City Chongqing (重庆来福士) stands right at Chaotianmen (朝天门), where the Jialing River meets the Yangtze River. Located at No. 8 Jiesheng Avenue in Yuzhong District (渝中区), this landmark shopping complex is an easy stop before or after strolling along the riverfront confluence.

The extensive shopping levels include global fashion brands, specialty electronics, tea houses, and regional dining spots. The mall complex is open to the public for regular shopping and dining, separate from the ticketed viewing deck on the upper skybridge.

For toiletries such as shampoo, visit Watsons (屈臣氏(来福士店)) on level 1F of Raffles City, unit 1-47 (接圣街8号来福士广场首层1-47). Pick them up during your Chaotianmen visit.

Spend a half-day at The Ring’s indoor forest

Choose The Ring Chongqing (重庆光环购物公园) for a garden visit with shops and restaurants in the same building. Its Muguang Forest (沐光森林) rises 42 metres from B1 to L5. Tropical plants, a waterfall and views from the upper walkways make it worth a separate trip for garden and architecture photos. Families can also make the greenery the main stop, then eat in the mall.

For a rainy or very hot day, allow half a day: visit the forest, have lunch, then browse the shops. Keep the outdoor Guangli street (光里) for dry weather. On a short central sightseeing trip, Jiefangbei and Raffles City fit more easily around the river route.

Go to 湖彩路118号. Take Metro Line 5 to Chongguang (重光), then follow Exit 1 for the indoor mall connection. Search the full name 重庆光环购物公园 to reach this branch; The Ring Garden City (光环花园城) is a separate mall.

The mall opens from 10:00 to 22:00; the forest opens from 10:00 to 21:30. Forest entry is free. For the B1 forest path, scan the QR code at the entrance and book through the WeChat mini program The Ring光环. The L1 and L2 walkways offer views into the forest without a booking.

Explore Guanyinqiao and plan your route

For an active shopping afternoon focused on fashion, casual dining, and local youth culture, head north across the river to Guanyinqiao (观音桥). Its spacious pedestrian street is a major shopping hub in Liangjiang New Area, surrounded by large department stores and underground shopping corridors.

To keep your day relaxed, organize shopping by location:

  • Stay around Jiefangbei for central errands between historic stops and river viewpoints.
  • Cross to Guanyinqiao for large flagship clothing stores, trendy lifestyle shops, and evening street snacks.
  • Browse our local shopping guide to compare modern shopping plazas with local supermarkets and grocery markets.
  • Use our everyday food guide to pick quick, reliable meals inside mall dining halls.

When buying snacks or tea sold by weight, always clarify the unit (usually per 500 grams, or 斤) and total cost before the merchant slices or packs the product. Our travel safety guide covers simple checks for fair pricing and smooth purchases.

Choose souvenirs that fit your luggage

Hotpot base (火锅底料) is a good gift for friends and family who enjoy cooking at home. Choose Chongqing spicy base for those who enjoy rich flavours, or a light, non-spicy duck-soup base (老鸭汤火锅底料) for those who prefer gentle flavours. Spicy bases come with beef tallow (牛油) or vegetable oil (清油). Pick up small packets in supermarket seasoning aisles for easy gifting.

While visiting Ciqikou Ancient Town (磁器口古镇), pick up bags of freshly fried crispy mahua dough twists (麻花). These crunchy snacks come in sweet, savoury, and spiced flavours, making excellent gifts to share with tea. For more snack ideas, see our street food guide.

For non-food keepsakes, light and compact items pack easiest:

  • Illustrated city prints and skyline postcards
  • Canvas tote bags featuring Chongqing landmarks
  • Small brass ornaments and locally crafted bookmarks

Flat, lightweight souvenirs fit neatly into suitcases without risking broken glass jars or leaking oils.

For postcards and fridge magnets showing Chongqing landmarks, stop at Jiefangbei Theme Post Office (解放碑主题邮局), 民权路3号, about 20 metres southwest of the Liberation Monument. You can easily add this stop while walking through Jiefangbei, before or after visiting Bayi Road.

After visiting the Three Gorges Museum (重庆中国三峡博物馆), browse its level 1F gift shop (文创馆), at 人民路236号. Pick up a 小粉炉 magnet inspired by the museum's pink incense burner, or a canvas bag featuring designs from the museum collection.

Panda gifts and stamps at Xinhua International

For panda gifts and souvenir stamps, visit 花花的家熊猫特产工厂店 at 民权路27号新华国际15楼1503室. From Jiefangbei, walk toward 八一广场 and enter the doorway marked 新华国际. Take the lift to floor 15, then turn right to room 1503. Fit this stop into shopping around Jiefangbei or a meal on Bayi Food Street. The shop sells individual items at wholesale prices.

Choose a green bamboo-tube panda fridge magnet as a small gift for friends or colleagues. A small knitted panda bag folds flat, while panda fans may prefer the plush wearing an “I love 重庆” sweater. Selected magnets and small knitted bags cost CNY 2.5 (≈ USD 0.37 ) each.

Bring your notebook for the illustrated stamps. Inside room 1503, go to the stamp area or ask staff to show you where it is. Choose landmark or portrait designs and stamp your blank pages. Stamping is free, with no purchase required. The rest area beside it gives you space to sit and fill in your travel journal.

Find official Pop Mart shops

Collectible blind-box art toys are popular keepsakes. To locate genuine Pop Mart (泡泡玛特) stores in Chongqing, consult the official Pop Mart China store locator. Look up the exact mall and floor level, as smaller third-party kiosks in subway stations may have limited selections.

You can show a picture of the specific series to floor staff to check current stock. Always buy from authorized stores to ensure authentic figures and keep receipts with original boxes.

Pack food gifts safely for flights

Before purchasing liquids, pastes, or perishable foods, review your airline baggage rules and your destination country's customs regulations. Chili pastes, oily hotpot bases, and sauces follow liquid rules. On international and regional flights from China, containers up to 100 ml may go in one resealable transparent bag of up to 1 litre per person. Larger containers must be checked. On domestic flights in China, these foods must be checked.

Protect your luggage with these simple packing steps:

  • Keep all food items in their original factory-sealed retail wrapping.
  • Place each package inside an extra zip-top plastic bag to prevent leaks from cabin pressure changes.
  • Check destination quarantine limits regarding animal fats, meats, or agricultural produce, as checked baggage remains subject to customs inspection upon arrival.
