With just one day in Chongqing, keep your route simple. Ride the monorail through Liziba in the morning, explore central Jiefangbei in the afternoon, and spend your evening enjoying hotpot and the lit skyline at Hongya Cave.
Plan around your arrival
This one-day plan focuses on central Yuzhong District (渝中区) to minimize travel time and avoid steep outdoor stair climbs with luggage. Metro Line 2 connects Liziba with Linjiangmen for Jiefangbei. Walk from Jiefangbei to the Yangtze River Cableway near Xiaoshizi Station, served by Lines 1 and 6.
If you arrive around midday, head straight to Jiefangbei (解放碑) for lunch and save the evening for the riverfront views. Leave distant spots like (磁器口), Wulong Karst (武隆), or the Dazu Rock Carvings (大足石刻) for a longer trip.
Store your bags at your hotel front desk or use station lockers before exploring. Check Liziba on the city map to plan your walking route along flat street entrances rather than following straight-line map pins.
Morning: ride the monorail into Liziba
Start your morning with a bowl of Chongqing noodles near your hotel. Then take Metro Line 2 towards Liziba Station (李子坝).
Line 2 runs above ground along the cliffs, offering clear views of the Jialing River (嘉陵江). As your train pulls into Liziba, it glides straight through the eighth floor of a residential apartment building.
Get off at Liziba and follow station signs down to the street-level viewing platform. Spend about 20 to 30 minutes watching trains arrive and depart from below. Check our Liziba train guide for viewing angles and station updates. When finished, take Line 2 back toward Linjiangmen Station (临江门) to reach Jiefangbei.
Lunch: snacks and noodles around Jiefangbei

Use the Jiefangbei clock tower monument as your central landmark. Walk around the corner to Bayi Road (八一路) to sample local street food. Good quick bites include hot-and-sour sweet potato noodles (酸辣粉) and brown sugar sticky rice cakes (红糖糍粑).
If you prefer a sit-down meal with air conditioning, head into any of the surrounding shopping malls. Our everyday eating guide breaks down how to order simple noodle and rice dishes.
Afternoon: choose one central activity
Pick one afternoon activity based on your energy level:
- City walk and photos: Explore the pedestrian streets around Jiefangbei and follow the alleys toward the riverfront.
- Shopping: Browse the department stores and underground malls near Linjiangmen.
- Yangtze River Cableway: Ride the cable car across the Yangtze River (长江索道) near Xiaoshizi Station (小什字). Queues can take over an hour during peak times, so check our cableway guide to book tickets in advance.
After the cableway, walk to Shangxinjie Station (上新街) and take Line 6 to Xiaoshizi, or choose a street-level taxi pickup point. Leave time for dinner and Hongya Cave.
Early evening: sit down for hotpot
Have dinner around Jiefangbei before starting your night-view walk. Plan for roughly 90 minutes to cook and enjoy your meal. For two people, start with a few dishes and ask about portion sizes. Add more as you eat.
Chongqing hotpot features a spicy beef tallow broth seasoned with Sichuan peppercorns. If you want a milder option, order a split pot (鸳鸯锅) with both spicy broth and clear bone or mushroom broth. Consult our hotpot guide and hotpot restaurant recommendations to pick a location close to your evening route.
After dark: Hongya Cave and riverfront views
After dinner, walk from Jiefangbei toward Hongya Cave (洪崖洞). The multi-tiered wooden complex lights up in warm golden tones every evening, looking like a floating cliffside village.
To view the exterior without getting stuck in stair queues:
- Enter from the top level along Cangbai Road (沧白路) directly from Jiefangbei.
- Walk onto Qiansimen Bridge (千厮门大桥) for an elevated view of Hongya Cave against the city skyline.
- For a wide angle from below, walk down to the riverside along Jiabin Road (嘉滨路).
Our Hongya Cave guide explains the best vantage points and escalator routes. Once you finish your walk, take Metro Line 1 or 6 from Xiaoshizi Station back to your hotel or catch a taxi from the street level.
If you leave tonight, set a time to collect your bags. Allow time to reach your departure station or airport terminal.
Common questions
Can I do this itinerary as a day trip from Chengdu?
Yes. High-speed trains between Chengdu East and Chongqing West or Shapingba take about 60 to 90 minutes. Catch an early morning train into Chongqing and a late evening train back, or stay overnight to enjoy Hongya Cave after dark without rushing.
Can I add Ciqikou Ancient Town to this one-day route?
You can replace the afternoon Jiefangbei walk with a visit to Ciqikou on Metro Line 1. Allow about 40 minutes each way on the metro, and return to Jiefangbei in time for hotpot and Hongya Cave.
What should I do if I only have half a day in Chongqing?
Skip Liziba and head directly to Jiefangbei in the late afternoon. Have an early hotpot dinner and spend the rest of your evening viewing Hongya Cave and the lit bridges along the river.
