Chongqing is an affordable city to visit in China. Most viewpoints and landmark streets cost nothing to explore. Your biggest costs will be your hotel, evening meals and high-speed rail trips into the mountains. Use the daily spending tiers and complete sample bills below to plan your trip budget.

Use these figures as a planning worksheet

These numbers are planning allowances rather than fixed package prices. Replace each allowance with your chosen hotel rate and spending preferences.

All prices are in Chinese yuan (CNY). These daily estimates cover regular spending inside Chongqing. They do not include international flights to China, visa fees, travel insurance, mobile data eSIMs, souvenir shopping or trains to your next destination. Use CNY to calculate your expenses, and use the currency switcher on the page for home currency estimates.

Three daily budgets to start from

Budget trip: CNY 230 (≈ USD 34 ) per person per day

  • Stay: CNY 100 (≈ USD 15 ) for a hostel dorm bed or your share of a simple twin room
  • Food: CNY 70 (≈ USD 10 ) for quick noodle breakfasts, street snacks and casual rice dishes
  • Transport: CNY 20 (≈ USD 3.0 ) for metro rides
  • Sights: CNY 40 (≈ USD 6.0 ) for smaller entrance tickets

This option focuses on tasty local eateries, free city viewpoints and travel by metro.

Middle comfort: CNY 340 (≈ USD 51 ) per person per day

  • Stay: CNY 180 (≈ USD 27 ) as your half of a comfortable CNY 360 (≈ USD 54 ) hotel room
  • Food: CNY 100 (≈ USD 15 ) for quick lunches and a sit-down hotpot dinner
  • Transport: CNY 30 (≈ USD 4.5 ) for metro journeys and occasional short taxi rides
  • Sights: CNY 30 (≈ USD 4.5 ) for cable car tickets or paid observation decks

Choose this tier for a private hotel room shared with a travel partner, sit-down dinners and car rides when you carry bags.

Premium comfort: CNY 720 (≈ USD 108 ) per person per day

  • Stay: CNY 350 (≈ USD 52 ) as your half of a CNY 700 (≈ USD 105 ) river-view hotel room
  • Food: CNY 170 (≈ USD 25 ) for quality specialty dining and popular restaurants
  • Transport: CNY 80 (≈ USD 12 ) for regular app-hailed cars across town
  • Sights: CNY 120 (≈ USD 18 ) for evening river cruises and panoramic viewpoints

Pick the tier that matches your habits, then plug in your actual room bookings.

Get the room calculation right

Hotels in China charge per room per night, while hostels charge per dorm bed. When two people travel together, split the nightly hotel rate by two. If you travel solo and book a private room, you pay the full room rate yourself.

Compare neighborhoods in our where to stay guide. For reliable domestic hotel chains, see our value hotels guide.

Use our hotel map to check station exits and surrounding streets before you book.

Food: spend less on lunch, enjoy dinner

A simple way to balance your food budget is to start with a cheap bowl of spicy noodles (重庆小面) for breakfast, grab a simple lunch, and save more for dinner. Our local dining guide explains how to order noodles and everyday dishes.

Chongqing hotpot (重庆火锅) bills you for the soup base, dipping sauces, side dishes and drinks. When ordering as a pair, ask staff if half-portions (半份) are available so you can sample more items. Find good spots in our best hotpot restaurants guide. For afternoon snacks, pick two or three favorites from our street food guide.

Sights and city transport

Many of Chongqing's famous sights are open public viewpoints that cost nothing to visit:

  • Viewing the lit wooden buildings of Hongya Cave (洪崖洞) from Qiansimen Bridge or the river walkway
  • Walking through the busy pedestrian plazas around Liberation Monument (解放碑)
  • Watching the monorail pass through the residential building at Liziba Station (李子坝) from the street-level viewing platform

Keep paid tickets, like the Yangtze River Cableway, high observation decks and night river cruises, in your activity budget line.

For getting around, the metro is quick, air-conditioned and cheap. Learn the key lines and multi-level station exits in our metro and transport guide. When traveling with heavy bags or after the metro closes, hail a car using our ride-hailing apps guide. Car fares are charged per trip, so split the cost among your group.

A three-day example for two people

Here is an example for two people spending three full days and three nights in the city:

  • Hotel: CNY 360 (≈ USD 54 ) per night for 3 nights = CNY 1,080 (≈ USD 162 ) total (CNY 540 (≈ USD 81 ) per person)
  • Meals: CNY 100 (≈ USD 15 ) per person per day for 3 days = CNY 600 (≈ USD 90 ) total (CNY 300 (≈ USD 45 ) per person)
  • City transit: CNY 30 (≈ USD 4.5 ) per person per day for 3 days = CNY 180 (≈ USD 27 ) total (CNY 90 (≈ USD 13 ) per person)
  • Sights and activities: CNY 30 (≈ USD 4.5 ) per person per day for 3 days = CNY 180 (≈ USD 27 ) total (CNY 90 (≈ USD 13 ) per person)

This brings the three-day total to CNY 2,040 (≈ USD 305 ) for the pair, or CNY 1,020 (≈ USD 153 ) per person.

Four days and three nights: a complete city bill

These examples are per person, with two people sharing a room. Economy uses CNY 100 (≈ USD 15 ) per person per night. Comfort uses half of a CNY 360 (≈ USD 54 ) private room, or CNY 180 (≈ USD 27 ) per person per night. Meals and city travel count all four days, including arrival and departure days.

Both plans include one CNY 32 (≈ USD 4.8 ) admission ticket to Huguang Guild Hall (湖广会馆) and one Yangtze River Cableway crossing at the official CNY 30 (≈ USD 4.5 ) maximum one-way fare ceiling. These replace the generic daily sights allowance.

Spending line Economy, per person Comfort, per person
Lodging, three nights CNY 300 (≈ USD 45 ) CNY 540 (≈ USD 81 )
Meals, four days CNY 280 (≈ USD 42 ) CNY 400 (≈ USD 60 )
City transport, four days CNY 80 (≈ USD 12 ) CNY 120 (≈ USD 18 )
Entrance ticket, Huguang Guild Hall CNY 32 (≈ USD 4.8 ) CNY 32 (≈ USD 4.8 )
Experience, one cableway crossing CNY 30 (≈ USD 4.5 ) CNY 30 (≈ USD 4.5 )
Total per person CNY 722 (≈ USD 108 ) CNY 1,122 (≈ USD 168 )
Total for two people CNY 1,444 (≈ USD 216 ) CNY 2,244 (≈ USD 336 )

Use the four- and five-day itinerary for the order of the city visits. For this city bill, replace its out-of-town day with Huguang Guild Hall and the south-bank riverside. Keep the central free sights and the Liziba and Ciqikou visits on the other days.

Five days and four nights: more time in the city

Add one more day and night using the same daily rates. The bill still includes one guild hall visit and one cableway crossing across the entire stay.

Spending line Economy, per person Comfort, per person
Lodging, four nights CNY 400 (≈ USD 60 ) CNY 720 (≈ USD 108 )
Meals, five days CNY 350 (≈ USD 52 ) CNY 500 (≈ USD 75 )
City transport, five days CNY 100 (≈ USD 15 ) CNY 150 (≈ USD 22 )
Entrance ticket, Huguang Guild Hall CNY 32 (≈ USD 4.8 ) CNY 32 (≈ USD 4.8 )
Experience, one cableway crossing CNY 30 (≈ USD 4.5 ) CNY 30 (≈ USD 4.5 )
Total per person CNY 912 (≈ USD 136 ) CNY 1,432 (≈ USD 214 )
Total for two people CNY 1,824 (≈ USD 273 ) CNY 2,864 (≈ USD 428 )

Use the extra day for an old street walk or a free museum. In the comfort tier, adding CNY 80 (≈ USD 12 ) per night for lodging, CNY 30 (≈ USD 4.5 ) per day for meals and CNY 10 (≈ USD 1.5 ) per day for transit gives you a private room, sit-down dinners and selected taxi rides.

Add a Wulong or Dazu day trip

For the limestone bridges, follow our Wulong guide. For the rock carvings, use our Dazu guide. Their rail fares, station transfers and scenic transport belong in the outing bill.

Start from the city total, subtract that day's city transport allowance, then add the return rail fare, road transfers and attraction tickets. Keep the existing meal allowance. Remove the guild-hall or cableway line only if you drop that visit from the whole trip. If you choose a tour, use its checkout total in place of the transport and admission it covers.

For Dazu, Baodingshan admission with return scenic transport costs CNY 130 (≈ USD 19 ) from March through November, or CNY 115 (≈ USD 17 ) from December through February. Add travel to and from the site to calculate the outing total.

The three-day example uses a CNY 30 (≈ USD 4.5 ) daily activity allowance; the four- and five-day bills use the two named activities. For an evening river cruise or observation deck, add the ticket you choose, or replace an activity you drop. For a multi-day trip downriver, compare cabins and shore visits in our Yangtze cruise guide.

Practical tips for keeping the bill down

In Chongqing, a short distance on a map can mean walking up several flights of steep outdoor stairs. Booking a hotel on a flat main street near an elevator-equipped metro exit cuts down on taxi fares when moving luggage. Room prices rise during China's May Day holiday week (early May) and National Day Golden Week (early October), so enter your actual booked room rate in the calculation.

A solo traveler who wants a private room on the comfort plan pays the full CNY 360 (≈ USD 54 ) per night. That adds CNY 540 (≈ USD 81 ) to the four-day budget, or CNY 720 (≈ USD 108 ) to the five-day budget.
