March to April and late October to November give you comfortable weather for outdoor stairs, hillside parks and riverfront lookouts. Summer is hot and humid, but pairing air-conditioned museums with dinner and illuminated night views makes a great trip. Winter brings cool mist that suits hotpot meals and hot spring day trips.

Choose by what you want to do

Chongqing (重庆) is built across steep hills, stone staircases and riverfront paths. Spring and late autumn make these walking routes pleasant. Air-conditioned museums, shopping centres and hotpot meals keep the city easy to enjoy during the rest of the year.

Choose your travel dates around your daily plans. Our three-day itinerary mixes open-air viewpoints with indoor meals. Mountain destinations have cooler weather than downtown: high spots in Wulong (武隆) are several degrees cooler than central river valleys.

Monthly precipitation rises sharply across April and May, peaks in July, and stays high through September.

March to May: spring walks and mild weather

March and April offer mild temperatures for exploring old alleys, steep stairways and river views on foot. If you catch an afternoon shower, explore indoor galleries with our rainy day guide.

May brings warmer days. Add a cafe or indoor teahouse break between longer walks. The May Day public holiday runs from May 1 to 5 in 2026 and brings large travel crowds. Visiting on weekdays outside this holiday gives you more room at Hongya Cave (洪崖洞) and Ciqikou Ancient Town (磁器口古镇).

June to September: beat the summer heat

Summer in Chongqing is hot and humid. July and August bring the highest temperatures, and warm spells often continue into September. Head out early for breakfast and the Liziba (李子坝) train lookout, then spend the afternoon indoors. Save long outdoor strolls and illuminated views of Hongya Cave for after dusk.

Here are two easy half-day routes that combine indoor spots with evening sightseeing.

Three Gorges Museum, the square and dinner

Eat lunch before visiting the Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum (重庆中国三峡博物馆). Spend 13:00 to 15:00 exploring the ancient Bayu and Yangtze River galleries. Permanent exhibitions are free to enter. The museum closes on Mondays, except on public holidays.

Walk out to People's Square (人民广场) for a quick photo of the Great Hall's circular green roof. Then take the metro or a taxi to Jiefangbei (解放碑). Enjoy a relaxed dinner from our everyday food guide or hotpot restaurant guide until dusk. Our museums and history guide gives details on the museum galleries and arrival routes.

Raffles City, dinner and the river confluence

For air-conditioned shops, cafes or a Monday afternoon, head to Raffles City Chongqing (重庆来福士) at Chaotianmen (朝天门). Spend the afternoon browsing shops and eat dinner in the mall. The upper viewing deck is a separate paid attraction.

After sunset, take a short walk along the outdoor plaza to watch where the Jialing and Yangtze rivers meet. This keeps your afternoon and dinner in one building before you head outside. Our shopping guide covers Raffles City, and our nightlife guide lists more evening spots along the water. For a chilled summer treat, try 冰粉 (ice jelly) from our street food guide.

Looking for an evening show? The acrobatic performance 《长江》 (Yangtze River) is another indoor option. Our shows and banquets guide compares evening entertainment choices.

School holidays bring larger domestic crowds in summer. Picking a hotel close to a metro station cuts down on uphill walking in the midday heat. If you are travelling with children, our family travel guide helps you plan a relaxed pace.

October and November: cool autumn walking weather

Late autumn brings cool weather for walking through historic neighbourhoods, visiting the Dazu Rock Carvings (大足石刻), or hiking through the gorge trails in our Wulong day trip guide.

The National Day Golden Week runs from October 1 to 7 in 2026. Arriving after October 7 gives you shorter lines and quieter streets.

Spend a morning walking the stone lanes of Ciqikou, then head to Nanbin Road (南滨路) for an evening walk. Looking north across the Yangtze River, you get a direct view of the illuminated downtown skyline.

December to February: hotpot season and winter mist

Winter is cool, cloudy and damp, with regular mist over the rivers. Give yourself more time for indoor museums, historic teahouses and steaming hotpot meals. Nearby buildings and the lights of Hongya Cave stay bright on foggy evenings, while panoramic skyline views from high peaks are best saved for clearer afternoons.

For a day trip outside the city centre, choose Tongjing Hot Springs (统景温泉) to soak in outdoor mineral pools beside a river gorge. For historic stone lanes, tea houses and hot springs, pick Jingangbei (金刚碑). Our hot spring guide compares day visits and overnight stays.

Chinese New Year falls in January or February, depending on the lunar calendar. It brings heavy domestic transit traffic, and some family-run restaurants close during the holiday.

Practical packing advice

Shoes with good rubber grip help on Chongqing's damp stone stairs. A light umbrella handles sudden rain showers. Bring a warm outer layer for breezy river walks in winter, and make sure your accommodation has reliable heating.

If you take a day trip to mountain areas like Wulong, bring a light windbreaker even during summer. Check the mountain forecast separately, since higher areas can be noticeably cooler than the city centre.

Common questions

Is September a good time to visit Chongqing?

Early September can remain hot and humid, with temperatures reaching above 30°C (86°F). Late September is usually cooler. For long days on foot, late October and November offer much more comfortable walking weather.
