For a Wulong Karst day trip from Chongqing, focus on the Three Natural Bridges. Take an early train to walk beneath the limestone arches and see Tianfu Official Post on the gorge floor. Allow a full day for the train, mountain shuttles and three hours on the trail.

What makes Wulong worth the trip

At the Three Natural Bridges (天生三桥), three massive limestone arches span a deep green canyon. Sheer vertical cliffs tower above the trail, framing lush mountain vegetation. Deep inside the gorge sits the historic Tianfu Official Post (天福官驿), a restored traditional post house with tiled roofs tucked right beneath the rock face.

Tianfu Official Post was rebuilt in 2005 for Zhang Yimou’s Curse of the Golden Flower (2006). The stone arches also appear in Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014).

Wulong forms a core part of the UNESCO World Heritage South China Karst. Water has dissolved and shaped the soft limestone over millions of years, creating giant sinkholes, caves and stone spans.

The three stone arches along the trail are:

  • Tianlong Bridge (天龙桥)
  • Qinglong Bridge (青龙桥)
  • Heilong Bridge (黑龙桥)

For a relaxed day trip, make this main gorge trail your first choice.

Take the fast railway route

Bullet trains run from Chongqing East Railway Station (重庆东站) directly to Wulong South Railway Station (武隆南站). This line provides the quickest and smoothest journey into the Wulong mountains.

Search Chongqing East (重庆东) to Wulong South (武隆南) on the official China Railway 12306 website or English app. Book an early morning departure so your day remains calm and unhurried. Reserve a return train that leaves ample time for afternoon road shuttles back to the station. You can check city transfers on our guide to Chongqing metro and transit.

Note that Wulong South is a separate facility from the older Wulong Station (武隆站) used by slow trains from Chongqing North. Always verify the exact station names printed on your tickets.

Remember to factor total travel time into your schedule:

  • Metro or taxi ride from your hotel to Chongqing East Station
  • Station security checks and boarding
  • Road shuttle from Wulong South up to the mountain visitor center
  • Scenic park shuttle bus to the trail entrance

Reach the mountain visitor center

When you step out of Wulong South Station, take an official shuttle bus or licensed taxi up to the Xiannüshan Tourist Center (仙女山游客接待中心). Show the Chinese name to station attendants to find the correct bus bay.

At the tourist center, collect your scenic park tickets and board the internal shuttle to the Three Natural Bridges entrance. Bring the original passport you used to book your tickets.

The tourist center is distinct from the national forest park further up the mountain. Keep these Chinese names on your phone:

  • Three Natural Bridges: 天生三桥
  • Mountain Tourist Center: 仙女山游客接待中心
  • Fairy Mountain Forest Park: 仙女山国家森林公园

To skip self-transfers and travel directly by private or shared vehicle, consider booking a Wulong day tour.

Walk the Three Natural Bridges trail

Set aside around three hours for the Three Natural Bridges walking route. This allows plenty of time to take photos, look up at the cliffs and rest along the way. A cliffside glass elevator takes you down into the gorge, but the trail itself still contains stone steps and varying elevation changes.

Wear shoes with good grip for the wet stone paths. Take time under each stone bridge to look upward at the scale of the arches. Stop at Tianfu Official Post to view the courtyard from above and stroll through its pavilions. The exit electric carts are suspended for road works. Walk about 800 metres to the transfer-bus stop, then take the bus back to the main tourist center.

If you are traveling as a family, sticking to this single canyon walk keeps the outing enjoyable for children. Take regular bench breaks along the path. Because the trail includes unavoidable stone staircases, travelers with strollers or limited mobility should check our guide to planning a trip with fewer stairs before committing to the full walk.

Choose the bridges, gorge or cave

Choose the Three Natural Bridges for huge arches, an open canyon and the film courtyard. The other sights offer different landscapes:

  • Longshuixia Fissure Gorge (龙水峡地缝): Choose this for a narrow gorge, waterfalls and cliffside walkways. Allow about three hours. It uses the same mountain visitor center as the bridges.
  • Furong Cave (芙蓉洞): Choose this for lit underground chambers, stalactites and stalagmites. Allow about two hours inside, plus the cableway approach. It needs a separate road journey toward Jiangkou (江口).
  • Fairy Mountain National Forest Park (仙女山国家森林公园): Choose this for broad pastures, pine woods and cooler mountain air. It is a separate visit farther up the mountain.

For a relaxed day, visit the bridges, have lunch in town and return to Wulong South for your train. Keen walkers arriving early can add Longshuixia using the shuttle from the bridges exit. Allow about six hours for the two walks, plus queues and transfers.

For slower walks or a visit to Furong Cave, use our Wulong two-day guide to choose your overnight base and transfers. The Dazu Rock Carvings offer another great day trip from Chongqing.
