Choose Dazu for a rewarding day of art and history outside central Chongqing. Head to Baodingshan to see grand cliffside carvings telling clear stories, or add Beishan if you want to study delicate statues up close.
Why choose Dazu
Visiting the Dazu Rock Carvings (大足石刻) shows you a quiet, thoughtful side of Chongqing. You will find thousands of detailed stone carvings, shaded hillside paths, and centuries of preserved heritage.
This UNESCO World Heritage property features five cliffside carving sites created mainly between the 9th and 13th centuries. The statues bring together Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian teachings alongside lively scenes of everyday village life.
You do not need to be an art scholar to appreciate the expressive faces, flowing robes, and massive scale. A local guide or audio headset helps connect each carving into a continuous story. If you prefer dramatic limestone peaks and an outdoor valley hike, choose a Wulong day trip. Pick Dazu when you want quiet walks, stone art, and stories of ancient life.
Baodingshan or Beishan?

Baodingshan (宝顶山), or the Baodingshan Rock Carvings (宝顶山石刻), is the best choice for first-time visitors. Here, massive sculptures stretch along a curved, U-shaped cliff. You can follow the carvings like chapters in a giant picture book. The colossal reclining Buddha and the Thousand-Armed Guanyin are two major highlights. You will also see ordinary scenes of herders tending water buffalo, families sharing meals, and villagers working, showing how this ancient art spoke directly to everyday people.
Beishan (北山), or the Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), is a separate site located a short drive away. It features rows of smaller niches cut into the hillside, holding statues with delicate details and expressive poses. Sculpture enthusiasts and photographers often pair Beishan with Baodingshan for a complete day trip. Keep in mind that Beishan has its own separate entrance and requires its own admission ticket.
For a relaxed day, stick to Baodingshan and leave time for the on-site museum. If your primary interest is sculpture, book both sites with pre-arranged transfers. The full World Heritage property also includes three smaller sites: Nanshan (南山), Shimenshan (石门山), and Shizhuanshan (石篆山). Standard day trips focus on Baodingshan and Beishan.
Choose a transport plan
A private car with a driver or an organized day tour from your downtown Chongqing hotel offers the simplest route.
You can also travel independently by high-speed train. Look up departures on China Railway 12306 from Chongqing stations to Dazu South Railway Station (大足南站). Because Dazu South is far from the scenic areas, take a taxi or hail a car directly from the station to the tourist center. Alternatively, take local bus 204 to Dianxinju (电信局), then change to bus 205 for the tourist center.
When using map or ride-hailing apps, save the Chinese names on your phone. For Baodingshan, search for the Dazu Rock Carvings Tourist Center (大足石刻游客中心) or 宝顶山石刻. For Beishan, look for 北山石刻. Show these names to drivers or station staff to ensure you reach the correct entrance.
A comfortable full-day route
Start early from central Chongqing and head directly to the Baodingshan visitor center. Spend the morning checking tickets, taking the scenic shuttle bus, and walking along the curved cliff gallery. Follow the marked path with a guide or audio player to learn the stories behind the major carvings.
Take a break for lunch or tea at the visitor complex. If you have a joint ticket, take a short taxi or car transfer to Beishan for the afternoon to view its delicate statues and quiet hillside niches. If you booked only Baodingshan, head back to Chongqing for dinner. If you enjoy historic sites, our museums and history guide offers more ideas for another city day. For family travel with children, look for carved animals, smiling figures, and ancient tools along the cliff walls.
