Setting up mobile data and the right map before you land saves you from climbing wrong staircases or struggling with payment screens in Chongqing.
Pick the mobile data option that matches your trip
For a short trip to Chongqing (重庆), compare your home carrier's China roaming plan with a travel eSIM from Airalo. An eSIM downloads straight to your phone as a digital profile. Roaming keeps your regular phone number active for bank verification texts. A travel eSIM provides a separate data allowance while your home SIM stays in your phone.
A travel eSIM needs an unlocked phone that is not tied to one mobile carrier. Check your phone model before you buy. Install the digital profile on a steady Wi-Fi connection before your flight. Then follow the setup steps to pick your primary data line. Some plans activate when installed. Others activate when they connect to a Chinese network.
A physical mainland SIM card is best if you want a local Chinese phone number for calls and local deliveries. Bring your passport for registration. Visit a China Mobile, China Unicom, or China Telecom service counter.
Match your connection to the apps you need
Local Chinese Wi-Fi networks and mainland SIM data block services like Google, Instagram, and WhatsApp. International roaming plans and many travel eSIMs route data outside mainland China. App access depends on your plan and how it handles web traffic.
Check with your data provider about the apps you need before you leave, especially for work email and messaging. Mobile data alone does not guarantee access to every foreign site.
A data-only eSIM does not give you a local phone number. Keep access to the home number you use for bank security codes. Check your home carrier's roaming fees for incoming text messages.
Choose your map before you go
On an iPhone, use Apple Maps. It is already on your phone and works smoothly in China. In mainland China, Apple Maps uses AMap's local mapping service. Use it to plan walks, check metro routes, and find station exits. Copy Chinese place names from this guide to pinpoint the exact hotel branch or station gate.
On Android, use AMap Global (高德地图). Download it from the official Google Play listing before you fly. The app focuses on Chinese streets, metro lines, and local restaurants. It includes English search features, while local venue details show in Chinese. Test it with a practice route to your hotel, and save the Chinese name for your trip. You can also install AMap Global on an iPhone if you want the same search results.
Use Google Maps only for initial research, then switch to Apple Maps or AMap on the ground. Mainland internet connections block Google services. Even if roaming lets Google Maps open, it often shows outdated local roads. For daily routes, choose Apple Maps or AMap to find the right street level and metro gate. Google also does not offer walking or transit directions while offline, so an offline map will not guide your walks.
Find the right entrance in Chongqing
Tap any attraction or hotel on our Chongqing map to open navigation. The map app routes from your current spot, and this guide stays open so you can check food tips and nearby sights.
Before heading out, match the destination's Chinese name and street address. Major hotel chains often have multiple branches on the same avenue. At Chongqing North railway station, check whether your ticket or driver pickup is at the North Square or South Square. On the metro, always note both the station name and the specific exit letter or number.
Chongqing is built on steep hills. A short flat line on a screen can mean outdoor staircases or roads on two different vertical levels. If you carry heavy luggage or a stroller, ask hotel staff for the flat street entrance that cars can reach. Set that entrance or a signed pickup point when you call a car. For Hongya Cave, decide whether you want the top cliff entrance on Level 11 or the riverfront road on Level 1 before you start walking.

Install these five essential tools
A map app: Use Apple Maps on iPhone or AMap Global on Android. Save your hotel's Chinese name and street entrance before you set out.
Alipay: Set up your digital wallet and link your foreign credit card before you fly. The app handles QR payments, metro QR codes, and ride bookings. Our payment guide covers card setup steps, and our metro guide explains train gates.
WeChat: This messaging app helps you chat with hotel staff and open built-in mini programs for ticket bookings and digital restaurant menus. Complete your account registration before departure to receive your verification code smoothly.
DiDi China: Ride Hailing: The current App Store listing uses this title. DiDi supports foreign phone numbers and international cards. Check your pickup point carefully on the road. In Chongqing, an overpass above you can share the same GPS point as the lower street.
A translation app: If you do not read Chinese, pick an app with live camera and text translation. Download offline Chinese language packs before your flight. Short, clear phrases work best when asking staff about ingredients or building entrances.
Order a meal to your hotel
China's food delivery apps let you enjoy local dishes in your room without leaving the hotel. Meituan (美团; Meituan) is one popular service. Taobao Instant Commerce (淘宝闪购) is the current name of the delivery service formerly called Ele.me. You can access it through Taobao, its standalone app, or Alipay.
If you want an easy first meal, ask your hotel front desk staff to help order from a nearby noodle or dumpling shop. Tell them your spice preference and any food allergies. Confirm the total price and payment method before placing the order.
If you already have Alipay, search for 淘宝闪购 inside the app. Turn on the built-in translation tool by going to Settings -> General -> Translation Tool. Ask the front desk to help enter the hotel's Chinese address and pickup location. Enter a phone number you can answer, pick your dishes, and pay with your linked card.
A local SIM card with voice calls helps if you plan to order food often, as riders call upon arrival. Data-only eSIMs let you place orders online but cannot receive driver phone calls. To use Meituan, follow these steps:
- Register with your active phone number and enter the text code.
- Open the food delivery section marked 外卖 (waimai).
- Enter your hotel's full Chinese name and street address. Add your contact phone number.
- Pick your food. In the delivery note, ask for front desk drop-off: 请送到酒店前台.
- Select Alipay or WeChat Pay at checkout. Keep an eye on the order tracker and collect your food at reception.
Our China payment guide walks you through wallet setup. Our hotel guide highlights branches with delivery robots that bring meals directly to your door.
For a solo dinner, order a single meal set. For groups, order several dishes to share. Show our food allergy phrases to staff if you need to avoid specific ingredients.
Save Chinese place names to your phone
Save your hotel name, Chinese street address, and closest entrance in your phone notes. Keep these essential landmarks and transit stations handy:
- Jiefangbei (解放碑)
- Hongya Cave (洪崖洞)
- Liziba (李子坝)
- Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (重庆江北国际机场)
- Chongqing North Railway Station (重庆北站)
Check the station name on your train ticket carefully. Chongqing North Railway Station (重庆北站), Chongqing West Railway Station (重庆西站), and Chongqing East Railway Station (重庆东站) are completely separate stations in different parts of the city. If you arrive by air, check our guide on getting from Jiangbei airport to the city to plan your transfer.
Pack your daily phone essentials
Bring a portable power bank, a charging cable, and a travel plug adapter. Navigation apps, photo stops, and translation cameras drain battery life quickly. Save offline maps and hotel location notes before leaving your room each morning.
Common questions
Will every travel eSIM open blocked social media apps in China?
Access depends on how the eSIM routes data. Many travel eSIMs route data outside mainland China, which keeps apps like WhatsApp and Instagram working. Check with your provider before purchasing.
Do I need a Chinese phone number for a short visit?
Not necessarily. Key apps like Alipay, WeChat, and DiDi accept foreign mobile numbers. A local SIM is only needed if you want voice calls and frequent food delivery orders.
Which navigation app should I use in Chongqing?
Use Apple Maps on iPhone or AMap Global on Android. Match Chinese names to find your exact hotel entrance or subway gate. You can also tap spots on our interactive map for instant routing.
Can I order food delivery to my hotel in Chongqing?
Yes. Ask the front desk for their exact Chinese address and where deliveries are left. Meituan and Taobao Instant Commerce are the main delivery apps, and hotel reception can help you order.
Can I use Google Maps in Chongqing?
Google services are blocked on mainland networks, and Google Maps often lacks accurate local street levels in Chongqing. Use Apple Maps or AMap Global for daily walking and subway routes.
