Hongya Cave (洪崖洞), also called Hongyadong, glows over the Jialing River (嘉陵江) in tiered cascades of amber light. Choose Qiansimen Bridge for an outside view, or go inside for food stalls, tea houses and souvenir shops.

What Hongya Cave actually is

Hongya Cave is a striking 11-storey complex built directly against a steep river cliff. The current building opened in 2006, recreating the traditional Bayu wooden stilt architecture known as diaojiaolou. While visitors often compare its glowing tiered balconies to the bathhouse in Spirited Away, the design is rooted in Chongqing's authentic cliffside heritage.

The real highlight of Hongya Cave is seeing it from the outside once the golden lights turn on. Inside, you will find busy floors filled with street food stalls, tea houses, and souvenir shops that are fun to explore before heading out to the riverside viewpoints.

For a closer look at wooden stilt houses, plan two days and one night in Gongtan (龚滩古镇). Walk its stone street, then look up from the Wu River side at the posts supporting the houses.

Arrive at the upper street level

Chongqing's 3D terrain creates a classic trap here. The top floor (Floor 11) opens directly onto Cangbai Road (沧白路) in the upper city, while Floor 1 opens onto Jiabin Road (嘉滨路) along the riverbank. On digital maps they look like they are right next to each other, but they sit dozens of meters apart in vertical height. Always set your ride-hailing drop-off or walking navigation to the exact street name rather than just typing Hongyadong.

Match your entry point to your evening plan:

For public transit, take Metro Line 1 or Line 6 to Xiaoshizi (小什字; Xiaoshizi) station. Exits 6 and 9 are the most convenient. From there, follow the posted signs toward Cangbai Road and walk about 10 to 15 minutes to reach the upper entrance. Linjiangmen (临江门; Linjiangmen) on Line 2 is another convenient stop if you are coming from Liziba (李子坝). Check our metro and transport guide for handy ticketing and navigation tips.

To save energy, both enter and exit through the upper Cangbai Road level. This allows you to browse the upper terraces and walk directly onto the bridge without hiking down to the river road. If you leave from the lower entrance, choose a pickup point on Jiabin Road in your ride-hailing app. Interior stone stairs connect the levels, including steps near (洪崖滴翠) between Floors 1 and 3. An outdoor hillside escalator was announced as a construction project in March 2026; use an escalator or elevator route only if it is open when you visit, especially with a heavy stroller.

To capture Hongya Cave at its best, try these three distinct vantage points:

For a grand angled shot over the water, walk onto the wide pedestrian promenade of Qiansimen Bridge (千厮门大桥), accessible right from Cangbai Road. The bridge gives you an elevated view showing the glowing wooden facade reflected in the Jialing River.

For the wide view from across the Jialing River, take the metro or a taxi to Jiangbeizui (江北嘴; Jiangbeizui) near the Chongqing Grand Theater (重庆大剧院). Looking back across the river frames Hongyadong right against the glittering downtown Yuzhong skyline. Our photo guide details the route and compares this view with Nanbin Road (南滨路).

For an imposing close-up perspective, walk along the lower riverbank sidewalk on Jiabin Road. Standing directly under the complex lets you shoot upward at the stacked timber balconies. A wide-angle phone lens is essential here to fit all 11 floors into the frame.

Build an easy evening around it

Start your evening with an early dinner around Jiefangbei (解放碑), then take an easy 15-minute downhill walk to Hongya Cave as dusk sets in. Arriving just before sunset lets you watch the transition: first seeing the natural river valley and mountain silhouettes, followed by the dramatic moment the warm amber lights flicker on across the cliff face. See our one-day itinerary to see how this fits into a full downtown day.

Lighting schedules shift slightly by season (generally turning on between 19:30 and 20:00 in summer, and earlier around 18:30 in winter), so plan to arrive around sunset for the best twilight photos.

Food, cost and rainy weather

Entering and photographing Hongya Cave from the outside is completely free. You do not need to buy any tickets or book restaurant tables to explore the public viewing decks. If you get hungry while browsing, pick up local skewers or sour-and-spicy noodles from our street food guide, or relax at an outdoor river-view tea stall.

The covered interior corridors provide dry shelter during passing showers, but the bridge walkways and riverfront viewpoints are fully open to the elements. On rainy evenings, the wet stone pavements reflect the gold lights beautifully, though you should wear shoes with reliable traction. If rain sets in for the evening, pair your visit with nearby indoor highlights around Jiefangbei.
