Keep each day relaxed by picking one main activity in the morning and leaving afternoons open for quiet breaks.
Choose a family-friendly hotel base
Choose a hotel around Jiefangbei (解放碑) or near Line 1 and Line 2 stations. This cuts down on walking with tired kids. Look for hotels with reliable lifts, family room layouts, and self-service laundry to handle quick clothes changes.
Because Chongqing buildings often sit on steep hills, a hotel entrance might be on the 1st floor on one street and the 9th floor on another. Ask the front desk in advance for the flat street entrance and easiest taxi drop-off point, especially if you have a stroller or heavy luggage. Check our where to stay in Chongqing guide for central neighborhood recommendations.
Spend the morning at Chongqing Zoo

Chongqing Zoo (重庆动物园) in Jiulongpo District is the easiest place for kids to see giant pandas and red pandas up close. Take Line 2 directly to Zoo Station (动物园站), or take a short taxi ride from downtown.
The zoo ticketing gate opens from 08:00 to 17:00, with animal viewing running from 08:30 to 17:00. Regular adult tickets cost ¥25 from January to November and ¥20 in December. Panda outdoor activity is highest during cooler morning hours, so head straight to the panda enclosures first before taking a snack break. Plan on spending about half a day here at an easy walking pace.
Ride the monorail at Liziba
Watching a train run right through an apartment building at Liziba Station (李子坝) on Line 2 is an instant hit with children. You can ride inside the front car for river views as the train enters the building, or get off at Liziba to view it from the street platform below. Our Chongqing metro and transport guide covers train routes and transfer tips.
Pair this ride with lunch nearby or an early afternoon rest back at your hotel before venturing out again.
Simple, child-friendly food options
Finding non-spicy meals in Chongqing is straightforward once you know what to order. Gentle, kid-friendly staples include steamed pork buns (包子), pork dumplings (水饺), egg fried rice (蛋炒饭), steamed egg custard (水蒸蛋), and mild noodle soups.
When eating hotpot, always ask for a split yuanyang pot (鸳鸯锅), which pairs a mild mushroom, tomato, or bone broth alongside the spicy broth. If you need dishes made completely without chili, save the copyable phrase 不辣 (not spicy) on your phone to show your server.
Manage hills, stairs, and strollers
Chongqing has plenty of outdoor steps and elevated footbridges. A lightweight, folding stroller or a baby carrier works best when navigating staircases or crowded metro exits. For longer cross-town hops between hilly neighborhoods, booking a direct car using our ride-hailing apps guide saves energy.
Shopping malls and museum complexes offer clean restrooms, air conditioning, and quiet seating whenever kids need to recharge. The Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum (重庆中国三峡博物馆) near People's Square provides an easy indoor visit on rainy or hot days. Regular admission is free with original passport ID, open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00 (closed Mondays except public holidays). No advance reservation is needed.
