Plan your stops before heading out

Make a quick list of what you need before leaving your hotel. A replacement charging cable, a light jacket or fresh fruit each call for a different type of shop. Choosing between a multi-story mall, a convenience store or an open food market keeps your trip simple.

Save the Chinese names and addresses of your target shops on your phone. Commercial centers in Chongqing sit across steep slopes and different street levels. Searching for the exact building or mall entrance saves you from climbing extra stairs.

Buy heavy groceries, drinks and packaged snacks near the end of your day so you do not carry heavy bags across town.

Head to Guanyinqiao for clothes and mall shopping

Guanyinqiao (观音桥) is one of the best areas for an easy shopping afternoon. The pedestrian streets and connected shopping centers cluster around the central circle and Jianxin roads.

Check the floor directory near the ground entrance before taking the escalators. If you want everyday clothes, you can compare a few popular stores in one building. This saves you from walking between different shopping plazas.

Clothing sizes often differ from international standards, so always ask to try items on. If you need a charging cable or plug adapter, show your phone or device to the shop assistant to match the connector.

Take breaks between stops. The malls offer plenty of tea shops and casual bakeries where you can sit down before continuing your errands.

Use Jiefangbei for quick central errands

Jiefangbei (解放碑) works best when you need something while touring the historic city center. Department stores and brand outlets line the wide pedestrian plazas around the clock tower.

Pick up your travel supplies, drop them into your backpack and keep walking. If you want a specific international or domestic brand, check its official store locator online first to confirm the exact branch and floor.

For local snacks, tea gifts and souvenirs, our souvenir shopping guide covers Raffles City and specialty gift shops nearby.

Browse an everyday fresh food market

A neighborhood food market offers a fun look at local life and daily cooking. To find one close to your hotel, search your digital map for 菜市场 or ask hotel staff for a nearby fresh market.

Shihuishi Fresh Market (石灰市农贸市场) is a well-known market in the Jiefangbei area. Check the street entrance before you go, as markets often sit on basement or lower hillside levels.

Walk the aisles first to see what is in season. Buy small portions of fresh fruit, such as citrus or berries, to eat back in your room. If your apartment has a kitchen, you can pick up fresh greens and vegetables.

Point politely to what you want to buy, and let the vendor weigh the produce for you. Ask before taking close-up photos of stall owners or individual stalls.

Check the price unit before you pay

Posted food prices in fresh markets usually refer to a specific unit of weight. In mainland China, food prices are commonly listed per jin (500 grams, or about 1.1 pounds), not per kilogram or per piece. Watch the digital scale display to check the final weight and price before paying.

Useful spoken phrases for buying food:

  • 多少钱? How much is it?
  • 这个多少钱? How much is this one?
  • 一共多少钱? (Yi gong duo shao qian?) How much altogether?
  • 我要这个。 (Wo yao zhe ge.) I want this one.

When buying packaged snacks and sauces, look for clear shelf price tags, production dates and shelf-life dates on the label. Keep your digital payment record or paper receipt until you check your purchases at the hotel.

Pick up daily goods at neighborhood supermarkets

Local supermarkets are the easiest place to buy bottled water, toiletries, fruit and packaged snacks. Follow overhead signs to find the right aisle, and match the shelf barcode numbers to the package to verify the price.

Take your basket to the checkout line and scan your items. Our payments guide explains how to pay using Alipay or WeChat Pay QR codes. Keep your receipt in case you need to return an unopened item.

If you plan to bring packaged snacks home, make sure they meet your home country's customs rules on meat and plant products.

For a food gift, pick up hotpot base (火锅底料) in the seasoning aisle: Chongqing spicy base for rich flavours, or light, non-spicy duck-soup base (老鸭汤火锅底料). See our souvenir guide for more ideas.

Combine your errands into one smooth outing

Choose Guanyinqiao for clothing, shopping malls and a relaxed meal. Choose Jiefangbei when you need a quick travel essential between tourist sights. Keep food and heavy drink purchases for your last stop so you can head straight back to your hotel.
