Chongqing sits on steep river hills where a five-minute walk can mean climbing several flights of outdoor stairs. Booking a ride saves your legs, moves heavy suitcases straight to your hotel lobby, and gets you across town after metro lines close. Setting up one app before you fly makes getting around smooth from your first day.

Start with the mainland China DiDi app

Chongqing streets and hotel lobbies often sit at different heights. Look for DiDi China: Ride Hailing (滴滴出行) in your app store. The app may also appear as DiDi-Greater China in older listings.

The mainland China DiDi app includes an English interface, accepts overseas mobile numbers for signup, translates driver messages automatically, and accepts international bank cards.

Install the mainland China app before your flight. Keep access to the phone number you use to register, because you need to receive SMS verification codes during setup.

A data-only travel eSIM gives you mobile data in China, but it rarely comes with a phone number that can receive texts. Make sure your home phone plan can receive SMS abroad, or complete your signup before leaving home. Our phone and travel apps guide covers these mobile setups in detail.

Link your international credit or debit card before departure and complete your bank's security check. Having the account ready means you can book a ride as soon as you clear airport customs.

Compare the other names you may see

You will spot several ride logos on cars across Chongqing:

  • AMap (高德地图): Combines detailed street navigation with ride bookings from several partner fleets. Its English interface provides route maps, pickup instructions, and estimated fares. Choose AMap if you already use it for walking maps.
  • T3 Chuxing (T3出行): A major ride platform across Chongqing. Its app offers both English and Chinese menus.
  • CaoCao Chuxing (曹操出行): Another common electric fleet in the city. Its app interface is in Chinese, so it works best if you can read Chinese or use screen translation.

For a first visit, start with DiDi for its easy overseas phone registration. If you already have a Chinese SIM card and a local payment account, you can compare fares across AMap or T3 as well.

Set your destination before requesting a car

Always copy your destination's full Chinese name and address into the search bar. Hotel chains and popular hotpot restaurants often have several branches in the same district. Matching the road name and building number avoids arriving at the wrong branch.

Chongqing is built across river ridges, so one building can connect to two different roads at different levels. A map pin placed on the lower riverside road might sit ten floors below your hotel lobby. Ask your hotel front desk for the best vehicle entrance (请问酒店正门车道在几楼?), and select that exact road in the app.

Use our Jiefangbei map point to orient yourself in the central peninsula. When heading to a high-speed railway station, check your ticket carefully: Chongqing North (重庆北站), Chongqing West (重庆西站), and Chongqing East (重庆东站) are completely separate stations across the city.

Choose a clear place to meet the driver

Stand beside a named street curb or marked pickup zone before tapping the call button. Narrow alleys, pedestrian plazas, and bridges rarely allow cars to stop.

Check your street name, travel direction, and ground level. At large shopping malls, wait outside a specific numbered entrance (such as Door 1 or Gate A) rather than a general mall location pin. Stay at that spot once the driver is on the way.

DiDi includes real-time English-Chinese chat translation. If the driver messages you, reply with a short, simple landmark like "Waiting outside Gate 1" (在1号门外等). Clear visual points work much better than long street descriptions.

Always check the arriving car's license plate against your screen before opening the door. Drivers may ask for the last four digits of your registered phone number to confirm the booking. Have those numbers ready to show on your screen.

Pick the right car and check the fare

For solo travelers, the metro is often the fastest way across town during rush hours. For two or more people, a car ride is often very cheap and saves long uphill walks. If you have large suitcases or travel with family, pick a larger car category so your luggage fits easily into the trunk.

Review the screen to see whether your quote is a fixed price or a metered estimate. Payment processes automatically through your linked card when the trip ends.

You can also book DiDi rides through mini-programs inside Alipay and WeChat. Our Chongqing payments guide explains how to link foreign cards and manage payment limits.

Use marked airport and railway pickup bays

At Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (重庆江北国际机场), choose Terminal 3 in the app. Follow the airport overhead signs to the designated ride-hailing pickup bays (网约车上客区). These bays are separate from the regular street taxi line.

At high-speed railway stations, walk toward the marked ride-hailing parking zone before ordering your car. Give yourself ten minutes to navigate station elevators with heavy luggage. Our airport transfer guide covers terminal layouts and metro connections.

Ignore unofficial drivers calling out for passengers inside arrival halls. Stick to the official street taxi queue or your confirmed app booking.
