Start with Chongqing noodles, sour-and-spicy glass noodles, grilled sweet-potato wraps, crispy pork and chilled brown-sugar jelly. This list helps you choose by flavour, spice and portion size, then find a stop that fits the day you already have planned.
Map · RestaurantsChongqing noodles · 重庆小面
This is the breakfast that makes Chongqing taste like Chongqing. Thin wheat noodles meet chilli oil, garlic, greens and the tingle of Sichuan pepper. Stir right down to the bottom before taking your first bite. Choose this bowl if you love strong savoury flavours, or want a hearty meal before a morning of sightseeing.
For Chongqing noodles, locals recommend the Jiaochangkou area. Bayi Road is better for sour-and-spicy glass noodles and small snacks.
You can start with a plain bowl, or pick your topping right here. Choose 豌杂面 for soft peas and minced pork, or choose 牛肉面 for beef. These are topping choices in the same dish, so you do not need three separate noodle stops. Budget CNY 8-15 (≈ USD 1.2–2.2 ≈ USD 1.2–2.2) for plain noodles and CNY 15-25 (≈ USD 2.2–3.7 ≈ USD 2.2–3.7) with meat. Ask for 小份 (a small serving) when you have more snacks planned later. One bowl makes an easy meal for a solo traveller. In a group, you can order different toppings and share a taste using clean chopsticks.
Our central pick is 花市豌杂面(花市总店), at 民生路85号. Choose the peas and minced pork topping if you want its classic style. Find the Minsheng Road shop on the map, then continue toward Jiefangbei and Bayi Road. A busy noodle counter near your hotel also makes a fine quick breakfast, so there is no need to travel across town every morning. Show the cook 不要辣椒,不要花椒 for no chilli and no Sichuan pepper, and 不要香菜 for no coriander. Check about wheat, soy, peanuts and sesame in the seasoning base. Plain noodles may also use lard or meat stock. Our local meal guide helps you turn your breakfast into a relaxed morning.

Sour and spicy glass noodles · 酸辣粉
Bouncy sweet-potato noodles, sharp vinegar and fragrant chilli oil make this a lively street snack. Pick it for the sour punch and chewy bite, especially if another wheat-noodle bowl feels too much like breakfast. This is a filling bowl, so treat it as its own food stop rather than a side dish next to lunch.
Our central choice is 好又来酸辣粉(好吃街店), right on the Bayi Road food street near Jiefangbei. Open the food-street area map, then look for the Chinese shop name on its sign. Budget CNY 10-15 (≈ USD 1.5–2.2 ≈ USD 1.5–2.2). A solo traveller can enjoy one bowl and wait until later for another bite. Two people on a tasting walk can share one bowl, then look for something crisp. Pair this stop with a Jiefangbei afternoon instead of travelling across town just for noodles.
Ask for less chilli before the sauce goes in, or show 不要辣椒,不要花椒,不要香菜. A premixed spicy sauce can be hard to adjust, so ask for an unseasoned bowl if you want zero heat. Common toppings include savoury minced meat, crunchy fried peanuts and fresh coriander. Ask about peanuts, soy, sesame and the broth. Wheat can also be in the seasoning sauce, even when the noodles are made from sweet potato.
Wontons · 抄手
These soft dumplings give you a gentle, soothing pause between chilli-heavy snacks. A thin, tender wheat wrapper holds a juicy meat filling. A clear-soup bowl feels light and warming, while the red-oil version brings the rich vinegar and chilli blend that locals love.
Our central choice is 吴抄手, at 中华路74号, close to Jiefangbei. Ask for 清汤抄手 if you want a clear-broth bowl. Budget CNY 15-25 (≈ USD 2.2–3.7 ≈ USD 2.2–3.7). Order the clear broth for young children or a mild lunch, and choose 红油抄手 if you prefer a deeper, spicy taste. One bowl is an easy solo meal. Two people can share a bowl alongside a small fried snack, using separate spoons.
Ask for no chilli, no Sichuan pepper and no coriander before the cook dresses the bowl. Wheat is in the dumpling wrapper. Wu's signature 金钩抄手 contains pork, dried shrimp and water chestnut in chicken broth. If you avoid shellfish or pork, ask staff which other filling fits your needs before ordering. Check for egg, soy and sesame in the recipe and sauce as well. Keep this stop on your central sightseeing route so lunch does not add an extra uphill climb.
Soft tofu with rice · 豆花饭
This classic dish offers the quiet, sit-down rest that a busy food walk needs. Warm, silky soft tofu comes in a bowl alongside steamed rice and a small dish of savoury dipping sauce. Spoon up a bit of tofu, dip it lightly into the sauce, and eat it over rice. Choose it whenever you want a satisfying, gentle meal that is much less oily than fried street food.
If you are visiting the Huangjueping art area, stop at 梯坎豆花, at 黄桷坪正街213号附9/10号. Paste that exact Chinese address into your map app. It makes a practical lunch stop on that trip, rather than a long trip just for tofu. On a central day, ask your hotel desk for a nearby 豆花饭 shop around Jiaochangkou. Budget CNY 15-25 (≈ USD 2.2–3.7 ≈ USD 2.2–3.7) for a simple tofu-and-rice set, with any extra side dishes charged on their own. A solo guest can order one set, while two people can add a shared vegetable or meat plate.
Ask for 蘸料单独放 (dipping sauce on the side), so you can choose how much spice touches your food. Ask for no coriander in the dip if you dislike it. Soy is the main ingredient in tofu. Dipping sauces often contain soy, peanuts, sesame or meat stock, so soft tofu with rice is not automatically a vegetarian meal. Our vegetarian and vegan guide and halal guide provides clear Chinese questions to show the staff.
Grilled sweet-potato wraps · 烤苕皮
A soft sweet-potato starch sheet goes onto a grill, then gets folded around a crisp, pickled filling. It is chewy around the edges and tangy in the middle. Choose it when you want a fun snack you can hold in one hand while you browse the stalls.
If you are near Yangjiaping, visit 何记兴·苕皮豆干, at 团结路1号负一层九龙好吃街41号商铺. Look on basement level B1 for shop unit 41, rather than looking for a street sign outside. Its sweet-potato wraps feature pickled radish and savoury minced meat. Tell the cook which filling you want. On a central day, choose a fresh grill stall along Bayi Road instead of riding across the city for a wrap. Budget CNY 6-12 (≈ USD 0.90–1.8 ≈ USD 0.90–1.8), with extra meat fillings costing a little more. Start with the fillings you can see, such as pickled radish and spring onion, and ask the price of extras. One wrap is plenty for one person. You can also ask the cook to cut it into pieces to share with friends. Eat it right away before the wrapper cools and turns stiff.
Ask for less chilli or no chilli before the cook brushes on the sauce. Ask whether the pickled radish is spicy too: 酸萝卜辣吗?. Show 不要香菜 if you do not want coriander. Ask about soy, wheat in sauces, sesame, and whether pork filling is inside. The sweet-potato wrapper can still come with a sauce containing wheat. Work this into your Bayi Road snack walk, then sit down with a cool drink.
Grilled tofu pockets · 烤豆干
Firm tofu turns warm, springy and lightly browned on the grill, picking up a savoury brushed seasoning. Some stalls slice the tofu into a small pocket and stuff it with pickled radish or minced meat. It is a wonderful pick if you enjoy tofu with a chewy texture and want a light savoury bite without finishing another large bowl of noodles.
The same shop, 何记兴·苕皮豆干 at 团结路1号负一层九龙好吃街41号商铺, is our specific choice for stuffed tofu pockets. Ask about the pickled radish and minced meat options. In the city centre, a made-to-order grill stall on Bayi Road near Jiefangbei keeps your day smooth and easy. Budget CNY 6-12 (≈ USD 0.90–1.8 ≈ USD 0.90–1.8) for a filled piece or skewer, and check the serving on the menu. A solo traveller can start with one or two pieces. A group can share a plate alongside a sweet-potato wrap. Keep the sauces separate if your friends like different levels of spice.
Ask for no chilli powder, less Sichuan pepper and no coriander before the cook finishes your order. Soy is the base ingredient. Ask about wheat, sesame or peanuts in the seasoning, and check whether meat stock or animal fat is used on the grill. Our food-allergy guide gives you clear Chinese cards for ingredients you need to avoid.
Crispy pork bites · 小酥肉
These bite-sized pork strips come hot from the fryer with a light, golden crust. They are savoury, crisp and best eaten within minutes of cooking. Choose them when your group wants something easy to share, or when you need a crunchy snack between noodle bowls.
Buy a small, freshly fried portion at a Bayi Road snack counter near Jiefangbei. If you are already having dinner at 珮姐重庆火锅较场口直营店, you can order a plate there to enjoy at your table. Budget CNY 15-25 (≈ USD 2.2–3.7 ≈ USD 2.2–3.7) for a small street portion, or CNY 20-35 (≈ USD 3.0–5.2 ≈ USD 3.0–5.2) for a shared restaurant dish. Start with a small size and order more only if you are still hungry. For solo travellers, this works well as a lunch side beside a light soup rather than buying several fried snacks at once.
Ask for the chilli dip powder on the side so you can test the heat. Sichuan pepper can already be mixed into the batter, so ask how the plain batch is seasoned. Fresh coriander is simple to leave off as a garnish. The batter usually contains egg and starch, and wheat or soy sauces may be added. This dish is pork, so pick a different snack if you do not eat pork. Save a big hotpot dinner for another evening.
Crisp-edged potatoes · 锅巴洋芋
Chunky potato bites are fried until they get a golden crust outside while staying fluffy in the middle. The cook drops them into a bowl, sprinkles seasonings on top, and tosses them hot to coat every piece. Choose this snack if you enjoy roast potatoes and want a familiar, comforting food prepared with local spices.
Our Bayi Road pick is 潘多多山里人锅巴土豆, at 八一路好吃街二期24号. Open the food-street area map, then look for the Chinese name and shop number. Budget CNY 10-15 (≈ USD 1.5–2.2 ≈ USD 1.5–2.2) for a small cup or bowl. A small cup is perfect for one person on the move, while two or three friends can share a larger cup using wooden picks. Eat them right away while the outer edges are still crunchy.
Tell the cook 少辣 (less chilli) or 不要辣椒,不要花椒 before the potatoes are tossed, and ask to omit coriander with 不要香菜. Potatoes are simple on their own, but seasoning mixes can include soy, wheat, sesame or peanuts. Some stalls also toss in 折耳根, a crunchy root herb with a strong, earthy taste. Show 不要折耳根 if you want to skip that herb. Check about the sauce and frying oil as well. Grab these after a Jiefangbei shopping stop instead of walking across town for potatoes.
Little iron-pan cakes · 熨斗糕
These small, round cakes feature a crisp golden crust and a soft, airy centre. They get their name from the little cast-iron cups used to bake them over heat. They make a sweet and gentle treat between spicy meals, especially if you enjoy the smell of fresh batter cooking right in front of you.
A classic stop is 熨斗糕老烧饼, beside the steps near 和平路133号, close to Jiaochangkou metro Exit 5. Open the cake-shop map. Budget CNY 2-6 (≈ USD 0.30–0.90 ≈ USD 0.30–0.90) for two or three little cakes. Start with one plain cake and one sweet red-bean cake. Two small cakes make a tidy snack for a solo visitor. A group can buy a small mixed bag and split them once they are cool enough to hold.
Chilli and coriander are not usual ingredients in this sweet snack. Ask about egg in the rice batter and wheat flour in the mix. Filled cakes may add milk, sweet bean paste or fruit jam, and some batters use fermented sweet rice. Show your dietary notes before choosing a filling. The shop sits beside outdoor steps, so visitors with heavy suitcases or strollers may want a simpler central snack stop at street level.
Chilled brown-sugar jelly · 冰粉
Cool, wobbly jelly served in chilled brown-sugar syrup is the classic sweet rescue after a spicy bowl of noodles. The clear jelly is soft and refreshing on the tongue. Choose a simple brown-sugar bowl to taste the clean flavour, or add fruit toppings if you want a fruit cup.
Our named dessert shop is 渝味道冰粉冰汤圆店(大井巷店), at 大井南巷5号. Find the Dajing Lane shop on the map. Try its cold jelly and rice drops together if you want to compare textures with a friend. On a quick walk near Jiefangbei, any busy jelly counter on Bayi Road is also fine. Budget CNY 5-12 (≈ USD 0.75–1.8 ≈ USD 0.75–1.8) for a standard bowl, with extra toppings priced separately. One cup is easy for a solo traveller to finish. In a group, pick two different topping combinations instead of one large bowl so everyone gets what they like.
Ask what toppings come in the standard bowl before adding extras. Common toppings include crushed peanuts, sesame seeds, sweet fermented rice, and milk or coconut milk. Ask for toppings on the side if you prefer to build your own bowl. Chilli and coriander are not usual toppings for this sweet dish. Make this the cooling reward at the end of your snack walk.
Rice jelly in brown-sugar water · 凉虾
The little tails in this dessert are rice jelly. The Chinese name includes the word for shrimp because of their shape. They swim in cold brown-sugar water, creating a light, silky sweet soup that feels like a cool drink. A local favourite is liangxia mixed with bingfen in one bowl: the rice drops and soft jelly work well together. Ask for 凉虾冰粉混合. For the mixed bowl, use only bingfen, liangxia and brown-sugar water, without peanuts or other toppings.
Try 凉虾 at 渝味道冰粉冰汤圆店(大井巷店), at 大井南巷5号. This makes a handy stop if your friend orders brown-sugar jelly. If a stall lists 凉虾 on your Ciqikou walk, it is another handy chance to try it. Budget CNY 5-10 (≈ USD 0.75–1.5 ≈ USD 0.75–1.5) for a cup. It is an easy pick when you want something light and sweet that is not loaded with heavy toppings. One cup is just right for one person. A couple can pair one cup of this with a bowl of jelly to taste both textures.
Chilli and coriander are not usual toppings here. Ask whether the shop adds milk, nuts or other ingredients, and ask about the rice-jelly starch if wheat is a concern for you. Remember that the shrimp name is only about the visual shape, not an allergy statement. A Ciqikou afternoon also suits a cold dessert break after the old-town lanes.
Small sweet rice balls · 山城小汤圆
These tiny sticky-rice balls are soft, chewy and served in a warm, sweet broth. A rich, sweet filling waits inside each thin rice skin. Choose them on a cool or drizzly afternoon when a warm bowl of soup feels far more comforting than an icy dessert.
Head to 山城小汤圆(八一好吃街店), located at 八一路181号负一层T3号商铺. This counter is down on basement level B1, so look for the lower floor rather than a street-front door. Open the Bayi Road shop map. Budget CNY 8-15 (≈ USD 1.2–2.2 ≈ USD 1.2–2.2) for a bowl. One small bowl makes a gentle finish after savoury street snacks. A group can order one bowl to sample first, then order another if everyone wants more. Ask for a plain sweet broth if you want to skip sweet fermented rice.
Traditional fillings often contain black sesame, crushed peanuts, walnuts, sugar and lard. Ask which filling the shop has prepared today, and check whether the broth contains egg, milk or fermented sweet rice. Chilli and coriander are not usual additions to these sweet dumplings. Do not assume the rice wrapper makes the whole dessert vegan, halal or gluten-free. Our vegetarian and vegan guide and halal guide helps you ask about the filling before you order.
Brown-sugar rice cakes · 红糖糍粑
These hot rice cakes have crisp outer edges and a soft, stretchy centre, coated with rich brown-sugar syrup. Cooks often dust them with roasted soybean powder for a nutty finish. Choose them when you crave a warm, comforting sweet bite rather than a cold drink.
You can buy them at street snack stalls and on hotpot dessert menus. If you are having dinner at 周师兄大刀腰片火锅(解放碑·全国总店), at 民生路9-2号, order its freshly made brown-sugar rice cakes as a sweet dish to share. There is no need to make a separate restaurant trip just for this dessert. Budget CNY 10-20 (≈ USD 1.5–3.0 ≈ USD 1.5–3.0) for a plate. On a street walk, share one plate before picking another snack. A solo traveller will find a whole plate quite filling, so it is best shared among two or three people. Look for a counter where they are fried to order.
Ask for the syrup and soybean powder on the side if you like to manage your own sweetness. Soy is common in the dusting powder. Ask about peanuts, sesame, wheat in the recipe, and the frying oil. Chilli and coriander are not usual additions to this dessert. If you already plan a hotpot meal, save this dish for your dinner table rather than having it twice in one day.
Ciqikou fried dough twists · 磁器口麻花
These crunchy fried dough twists are the signature snack of Ciqikou, perfect to munch while you walk or pack into your bag for the train. Sweet twists are nice with tea, while spiced or savoury twists give you a peppery crunch. Choose them if you want a dry snack that travels well in your daypack without spilling.
陈昌银麻花(磁器口7号店), at 磁器口正街77号, is our chosen old-town branch. Find this exact branch on the map, and taste a small sample where samples are offered before choosing your bag. Budget about CNY 10-25 (≈ USD 1.5–3.7 ≈ USD 1.5–3.7) for a small bag, depending on the weight and flavour you pick. One bag gives a solo traveller plenty of snacks for several days. A group can buy two small bags of different flavours to share instead of carrying giant gift boxes.
Pick a sweet or plain flavour if you want zero spice, as pepper flavours carry a noticeable numbing kick. Coriander is not a usual ingredient in dough twists. Ask about wheat, sesame, peanuts and egg in the flavour you choose. For gifts, look for sealed packages, check the best-before date on the seal, and confirm the weight and price before the clerk packs it. Our Ciqikou guide fits this stop into an easy walking route.
Jiangjin crisp rice sweets · 江津米花糖
Puffed rice held together with sweet sugar syrup makes a light, crunchy bar that breaks with a crisp snap. It is a handy food gift to take home because sealed packs are easier to carry than a fresh cake. Many recipes add roasted peanuts or sesame seeds for an extra nutty aroma.
Look for sealed boxes of 江津米花糖 made by well-known brands such as 荷花 or 玫瑰 in a central supermarket or food-gift shop. The Jiefangbei area map is a useful starting point for a central shopping walk. You do not need to make a long trip to Jiangjin district just to buy a box. Budget CNY 10-30 (≈ USD 1.5–4.5 ≈ USD 1.5–4.5) for a small box, while larger gift packs cost more. Pick up one pack for yourself, or buy a few small boxes to give to friends back home.
Read the ingredient box on the back for peanuts, sesame, walnuts or other tree nuts, wheat or malt ingredients, and flavour additions. Some varieties also use lard, so check the label if you avoid pork fat. Store clerks can help you read the ingredients list if you ask. These are sweet bars, with no usual chilli or coriander. Pack the box flat inside your suitcase so the crisp bars do not get crushed. Our local shopping guide helps you find them alongside other travel goods.
Hechuan walnut slices · 合川桃片
Thin slices made from glutinous rice, walnuts and sugar have a soft texture and a nutty sweetness. Try a few with tea, or choose a sealed pack as a food souvenir. Look for 合川桃片 on the pack. Walnuts are a main ingredient; check the ingredient label for other nuts, wheat and milk.
Buy a sealed pack during your central shopping walk, around Jiefangbei.
Choose a snack walk that fits your day
First visit: Jiaochangkou, Jiefangbei and Bayi Road. Start with a small bowl of Chongqing noodles around Jiaochangkou. Continue to Bayi Road food street near Jiefangbei for sour-and-spicy glass noodles, a grilled sweet-potato wrap and crispy pork. Finish with chilled brown-sugar jelly. Spread these five favourites over two outings, buying one fresh snack at a time.
A slower lunch: Jiaochangkou and Heping Road. Take a seat for a calm bowl of wontons or soft tofu with rice, then head toward Heping Road for a warm iron-pan cake. Heping Road has steps and changes in street level. Ask your driver to drop you directly on the named street, and leave your large bags at the hotel. If you have a baby stroller, pick a street-level restaurant and skip the steps leading to the cake stall. Our metro guide shows you how to reach the area, and our accessibility guide explains why short lines on Chongqing maps can involve steep stairs.
An old-town afternoon: Ciqikou. Eat a light lunch before you arrive, try a cool cup of rice jelly as you walk the historic streets, and sample fried dough twists along the way. Buy your sealed gift bags right before you leave so you do not carry heavy shopping bags through crowded lanes all afternoon. Follow our Ciqikou route for sightseeing tips. If a famous stall has a huge queue, simply keep walking to another busy stall nearby, as there are many great vendors to enjoy without standing in line.
A solo traveller will usually feel full with one noodle bowl, one small savoury snack and one sweet dessert across a half day. Two people can easily share two or three snacks between regular meals. A small group can order one portion of a few dishes to taste together, then order seconds of their favourites. Give children mild, familiar foods first and plan regular sit-down rests.
For eggs, burgers or fish and chips, use our food from home guide.
Make the order taste like your choice
Show these short phrases to the cook before the sauce is added:
| Chinese to show | What you want |
|---|---|
| 少辣 | Less chilli |
| 不要辣椒 | No chilli |
| 不要花椒 | No Sichuan pepper |
| 不要香菜 | No coriander or cilantro |
| 蘸料单独放 | Dipping sauce on the side |
| 小份 | A small portion |
| 可以切开吗? | Could you cut it into pieces? |
| 多少钱? | How much does it cost? |
Less chilli still leaves some heat. Chilli and Sichuan pepper are two different spices, and many local spice blends contain both. If you want zero spice, ask for the dish without seasoning before the cook adds the sauce. Coriander and cilantro are different words for the exact same fresh green herb. If you dislike it, asking for none is a normal dining request.
Our food cards list the common ingredients to check for each dish, including sauces and cooking oils. If you have a food allergy, show your Chinese allergy card and ask staff to check the ingredients and preparation with the cook. If you avoid pork or animal fats, use our vegetarian and vegan guide and halal guide, because a simple tofu bowl or sweet rice dessert can still contain lard or meat broth.
Pay once you know your portion
The prices listed here are normal budgets for one standard portion, rather than fixed rates for every vendor in town. Adding extra meat, extra dessert toppings, large drinks or fancy gift boxes will increase your total bill. For snacks sold by weight, confirm the weight and price before the shopkeeper closes the bag.
Both walk-up counter ordering and table QR-code menus are common in Chongqing. Simply point to the dish, confirm the size you want, and pay the amount shown on the screen. Our payment guide explains how to link your foreign bank card to Alipay and WeChat Pay for QR-code payments. Choose busy stalls where you can see the food cooking fresh, eat hot snacks while they are steaming, and
Save a full hotpot dinner for a separate night. Sampling these street snacks is a lovely way to explore normal neighbourhood streets, enjoying a fresh texture and flavour at every corner.
Common questions
Where is an easy place for a Chongqing snack walk?
Bayi Road near Jiefangbei is a simple first choice. Keep it with your central sightseeing. Jiaochangkou adds sit-down meals and warm cakes; Ciqikou is a good stop for fried dough twists and food gifts.
Can I find Chongqing street food without chilli?
Yes. Choose clear-broth wontons, soft tofu with sauce on the side, or a sweet dessert. For a cooked savoury dish, show 不要辣椒 and 不要花椒 before seasoning. Asking for less chilli still leaves some heat.
Does the rice dessert called 凉虾 contain shrimp?
The name describes the tiny tail-shaped pieces of rice jelly. Shrimp is not a traditional ingredient. Ask staff about this shop’s recipe and toppings if you have an allergy.
How much should I budget for a snack walk?
Plan for about CNY 30-60 (≈ USD 4.5–9.0 ≈ USD 4.5–9.0) per person to enjoy a noodle bowl, a small savoury bite and a sweet dessert. Sharing dishes gives you more flavours for the same money. Meat toppings and gift boxes will add a little more.
Which Chongqing snacks are easy to take home?
Sealed bags of Ciqikou fried dough twists and boxed Jiangjin crisp rice sweets pack easily in luggage. Choose sealed packages, check the best-before date, and buy them toward the end of your day.
