For your first evening, grab dinner near Jiefangbei and stroll to Hongya Cave. If you want something unique, try hotpot inside an air-raid shelter followed by cave beer at CAVER, or catch live music at BB FUNK. For open river views and an acrobatic show, head to Nanbin Road on the South Bank.
Choose an evening route
Chongqing spreads across steep hills and two wide rivers. Pick one central area for your main evening, then take a short taxi ride between extra stops:
- Jiefangbei and Hongya Cave: Grab street snacks or spicy hotpot, then walk to the glowing riverfront cliffside. Allow about three hours.
- Shelter dinner and cave beer: Enjoy hotpot inside 洞亭火锅, see the Jialing River, and grab drinks at CAVER near Liziba.
- Nanbin Road: Have an early dinner at Changjiahui with skyline views, then catch an evening acrobatic performance farther east.
- Guanyinqiao and 9th Street: Go for late dinner, lively bars, and dancing. BB FUNK offers a relaxed stop for cocktails and live jazz.
Jiefangbei dinner, then Hongya Cave
Start around 18:00 near Jiefangbei (解放碑). Sit down for classic Chongqing hotpot or walk along Bayi Road (八一路) to try small local bites.
After eating, walk over to Hongya Cave (洪崖洞). To see the full illuminated cliffside from below, walk along Jiabin Road (嘉滨路), or step onto the pedestrian walkway of Qiansimen Bridge (千厮门大桥) for an elevated angle across the water. The Hongya Cave guide details street-level entrances, while the photo spots guide highlights alternative viewpoints.
Wrap up your night with local dessert near your hotel, or take a taxi north to 9th Street around 21:30 for late-night bars.
Coffee, shelter hotpot and cave beer

For a quiet afternoon drink before dinner, stop by 造空间seldom街角咖啡 in Shancheng Lane (山城巷), right behind the Houlu building (厚庐). The café connects to art spaces and an old air-raid shelter tunnel below.
洞亭火锅

To dine deep inside a real tunnel, head to 洞亭火锅(防空洞店) at 中山三路149号附1号. Average spending is about CNY 87 (≈ USD 13 ≈ USD 13) per person. Arrive around 18:00 to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the meal.
After dinner, take a taxi down to Jiabin Road along the river, then continue to CAVER防空洞酒吧 at 李子坝正街21号, located across from Liziba War Relics Park (李子坝抗战遗址公园). With its natural rock walls and raw interior, this cavern taproom offers a memorable craft beer stop.
Because these stops are spread out across Yuzhong district, hailing a taxi between them saves climbing outdoor stairs. If you just want dinner and beer, take a cab directly from the restaurant to CAVER.
Nanbin Road: dinner, river views and a show
For an easy riverfront evening, cross to Changjiahui (长嘉汇) on the South Bank before sunset. Eat dinner in the shopping complex, then take a stroll along the riverside promenade. You get an unobstructed view across the water toward the Yuzhong skyline where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet. Tea or dessert is an easy final stop if you want to stay by the river.
To see a live performance, finish dinner early and take a short taxi ride east along the river to Chongqing International Circus (重庆国际马戏城) at 南滨东路4号. The resident acrobatic show 《长江》 begins at 19:30 and runs for 70 minutes, combining high-altitude stunts with theatrical stagecraft.
Check the shows and banquets guide for ticketing options and performance schedules. The circus venue sits farther down Nanbin Road, so take a taxi instead of walking.
9th Street bars or live music at BB FUNK
Start with dinner around Guanyinqiao (观音桥), then walk or take a quick taxi to 9th Street (九街) around 21:00. This lively district is packed with cocktail lounges, pubs, and high-energy clubs. If you want touring indie bands, check local listings for livehouse events marked 演出.
If you prefer an intimate music lounge, choose BB FUNK at 紫薇路32号 on Ziwei Road. You can eat on the street before sitting down for drinks, or arrive by taxi from Guanyinqiao. Huangnibang metro station's Exit 3B is just 360 metres away.
BB FUNK features cozy counter seating and small tables that work well for solo visitors and groups. Cocktails run CNY 68–88 (≈ USD 10–13 ≈ USD 10–13) per drink, coffee is CNY 18 (≈ USD 2.7 ≈ USD 2.7) per cup, and non-alcoholic options are available. The bar opens daily from 19:00 to 02:00, with live jazz on Saturdays and Latin dancing on Wednesdays. You can check the current schedule on the BB FUNK programme.
To choose by music, party atmosphere or a relaxed drink, use ten Chongqing nightlife venues, with filters for jazz, electronic music, hip-hop and live bands.
Snacks before or after the bars
Along Bayi Road, look for 酸辣粉 (hot and sour sweet potato noodles) or warm 汤圆 (sweet rice dumplings). Late at night outside bar areas, street barbecue carts grill skewered meat, tofu, and seasonal vegetables tossed in roasted cumin and ground chilli. See our street food guide for ordering tips.
Practical tips for the evening
- Some nightclubs and lounges require a 最低消费 (minimum spend) for private booths and large tables. Check with the host before sitting down, or choose open bar stools for a single drink.
- If you want less heat in your late-night food, say 少辣 (less spicy).
- Metro closing times depend on the station and direction. Read the last-train board at the station if you plan to return by rail.
- For late-night rides, hail a yellow cab or book a ride in Alipay or WeChat. Pay attention to your pick-up level: Hongya Cave's upper cliff road and lower riverside road are completely different pickup points.
- Keep your hotel name and address written in Chinese characters to show your driver.
