A bowl of noodles at Jiefangbei and a river view can fit between flights, if you leave enough time for the airport. Work backwards from your next departure before choosing between the city and a bed near Jiangbei Airport.

Count the hours you can actually use

A ten-hour connection does not give you ten hours in Chongqing. Start with the next flight's departure time, then work backwards. Immigration, bags, the trip into town and the return all use part of your stop.

Here is a planning example for a ten-hour international connection, rather than a promise about queues:

Part of the stop Time to set aside
Landing, immigration and collecting bags 1 hour 30 minutes
Storing bags and reaching your transport 30 minutes
Airport to the centre, including station walks 1 hour 15 minutes
Return journey, including a traffic allowance 1 hour 30 minutes
Back inside the departure terminal before the next international flight 3 hours
Left for eating and sightseeing 2 hours 15 minutes

Replace these estimates with your actual flight and transfer details. Once you are outside arrivals, recalculate with the time left. Use your airline's check-in, bag-drop and boarding deadlines. For a domestic departure, plan to reach the terminal two hours beforehand unless your airline requires longer. An international departure needs immigration as well as security.

Gap between flights A useful plan
Under 8 hours Eat and rest at the airport. Processing and return time can use nearly the whole gap.
8–10 hours Consider one short city stop only if the calculation leaves about two hours outside the airport.
10–12 hours Choose Jiefangbei; add Hongya Cave when at least three city hours remain.
12–24 hours, including a night Arrange sleep first, then use the remaining daylight for the city.

These are choices for planning, not minimum connecting times sold by airlines. A through-ticket, a separate-ticket transfer and an international arrival can need very different amounts of time.

Check whether your connection lets you enter China

An international transfer is not automatically permission to go sightseeing. A flight onwards to another Chinese city also involves entry into China, even if the whole trip was sold together.

If you have a visa, a residence permit or a passport covered by a visa waiver, use the entry rules that apply to that document. Eligible ordinary British and Canadian passports have a 30-day short-visit waiver through 31 December 2026. Other passports can have different rules.

For 240-hour visa-free transit, you need an eligible passport and confirmed onward travel to a different country or region. San Francisco → Chongqing → Tokyo illustrates the route rule; San Francisco → Chongqing → San Francisco does not. This restriction belongs to transit permission, not to a separate tourist visa or ordinary visa waiver.

The 24-hour transit arrangement allows eligible international transit without leaving the port's restricted area. To leave that area, you must obtain temporary entry permission from border inspection. Follow the transfer signs if you are staying airside. Our visa and entry guide explains the document options.

Sort out your bags and terminal before leaving

Passenger flights now use the T3 complex at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (重庆江北国际机场, CKG). T3A is the main terminal. T3B is the satellite hall reached from T3A by the airport's automated train. Gates beginning with J, K, L or M are in T3B. Check your onward boarding pass for its gate: the train ride takes about three minutes, but reaching it and walking to your gate takes longer.

Before leaving the airport, ask your airline whether your checked bag is tagged through and whether this connection requires you to collect it. Keep your onward boarding pass if it has already been issued. Separate tickets can mean collecting a suitcase and checking it in again when bag drop opens.

For carry-on bags or a suitcase you have collected, the T3 airport metro station has SF self-service storage lockers. The largest compartments take a suitcase up to 28 inches. They are inside the metro paid area and operate during metro hours. Storage uses phone scanning and identity verification; see the displayed price and complete the process before starting your city trip. A metro locker is unsuitable if you need to collect your bag after the station closes.

For a staffed storage option, ask the arrival information desk for 行李寄存 (luggage storage), its closing time and the collection point. Keep collection time in your return calculation.

Rest at the airport or sleep nearby

A short wait in the terminal

Outside security, the free overnight rest area beside Domestic Arrivals Door 7 has reclining seats, sofas and charging points. Ask for 免费过夜休息区 (free overnight rest area). The international transfer zone has its own sofas and reclining chairs for travellers remaining airside.

For a domestic flight leaving before 09:00 the next day, night check-in operates at T3 island 3D from 23:00 to 01:00. Spring Airlines and 9 Air are excluded. After security, rest areas near E10 and E11 offer free seats and paid space charged by time.

Paid lounges have their own access rules and opening hours. Match the lounge to your domestic or international departure and its position before or after security. Arrival at CKG alone does not give you access to every departure lounge.

An overnight connection

The airport's 重庆飞·壹宿 programme offers a free overnight hotel to travellers who meet its conditions. For the air-to-air offer, the connection must be 8–48 hours, with the second flight leaving after 05:00 the next day. The origin and final destination must be different cities.

Apply one to six days before travel in the 重庆飞会员CKG WeChat mini programme. Submit the flight and identity documents requested for your itinerary and wait for approval. Passport details are among the accepted identity materials. A ticket bought from an overseas airline or travel platform can need an airline-stamped itinerary or travel confirmation.

After arrival, approved travellers show the phone number linked to their application at 重庆飞中转服务中心 in T3A, outside security. Staff verify the approval and issue a physical voucher. It is about 200 metres to the right of the arrival exit, near Door 6 and Dicos (德克士). The participating hotel arranges the shuttle. Entry permission is still needed to leave the international transit area.

For a paid room in the terminal, Meichen Hotel, Chongqing Airport T3 (美宸酒店(重庆机场T3航站楼店)) is on the domestic arrivals level. It accepts guests from all countries and regions and has a 24-hour front desk. Its standard booking starts at 14:00. For a midnight arrival or daytime sleep, book a room period that actually covers those hours; a standard overnight rate does not establish hourly availability.

A short daytime route: Jiefangbei and lunch

Start at the Liberation Monument

Choose this route when your calculation leaves around two hours in town. Head to Jiefangbei (解放碑), the pedestrian shopping area around the Liberation Monument. Have a quick meal nearby on Bayi Road (八一路), then walk the surrounding streets before returning.

A bowl of Chongqing noodles or a few street-food dishes suits a short stop better than a full hotpot meal. The monument and public walking streets do not require a ticket. Nearby shopping centres give you somewhere to sit indoors in wet or very hot weather.

Use the airport-to-city guide for tickets, the Line 10 to Line 6 connection via Hongtudi, and official taxi pickup. The metro route reaches Xiaoshizi (小什字); include the station walk and interchange in your time.

A longer stop: add Hongya Cave

Stay on the upper street level

With roughly three to four hours available in the centre, start with the same Jiefangbei meal. Then walk to Hongya Cave's Cangbai Road entrance (洪崖洞, 沧白路), on Floor 11. From Jiefangbei, allow about 15 minutes for this walk.

The upper street level lets you reach the Qiansimen Bridge (千厮门大桥) approach without descending to the river road. Look at the wooden balconies from outside, then return from the upper level. The Hongya Cave guide explains the viewpoints and the difference between its upper and lower entrances.

If your available hours overlap dusk, make the river view the last stop. Lighting changes with the season. A midnight arrival is a sleep stop, rather than a reason to rush downtown expecting the evening display. Once immigration and travel are finished, the night-view window may already be over.

Keep the cableway, a river cruise, Liziba and Ciqikou out of this compact route. They add journeys or queues. If you have a full day after sleep, use our one-day itinerary to choose additional stops. Wulong and Dazu need their own day trip.

Set your return time before the first stop

Write down the time you need to be inside T3A, then subtract the return ride and any luggage collection. For example, a 20:00 international departure with a three-hour airport allowance means arriving at 17:00. With a 90-minute return allowance, leave the centre by 15:30, earlier if you still need to collect stored bags.

Take Line 6 back to Hongtudi and change to Line 10 for 江北机场T3航站楼. For a car, use the official taxi ranks or a booked pickup at an accessible street. A private airport transfer can cover the city-to-airport leg; book that leg for the time you need.

The metro's last departure depends on the station and direction. For late-night travel, use a car and keep the return time based on your flight. Our payment guide and internet and apps guide help you prepare the phone tools needed for transport and lockers.
