October gives you an exciting mix of old hillside lanes, quiet indoor museums, and breezy nights along the water. Center each day on one neighbourhood, then choose an evening river walk that fits the published schedule.

Choose the right October plan for your trip

Later in October, choose calmer hill walks, art exhibitions, and glowing river views. Match the seasonal event notices to your travel dates, then build each day around one experience you want most.

Autumn in Chongqing brings damp, misty weather. Pack a light travel umbrella, shoes with reliable rubber grip for slick stone, and a light jacket or sweater for cool evenings by the water. Our best time to visit guide gives you the full seasonal picture across the year.

Walk the stone steps of Mountain City Lane

Mountain City Lane (山城巷) combines antique wooden homes, steep stone stairs, and open views high over the Yangtze River. Leave time to explore the quiet side alleys.

Ride Metro Line 1 or Line 2 to Jiaochangkou station (较场口). Walk to the lane entrance on Zhongxing Road (中兴路). Do not drop a map pin on the cliff walk itself, because the lower road and upper paths sit at very different levels on the cliff. Climb the stone steps at an easy pace, and pause at the viewing terraces to rest your legs.

With young children or older relatives, choose a short route. The lane has stone stairs, so a baby carrier is easier than a stroller. Solo travellers can follow the side paths at their own pace and stop for tea before dinner. Our old streets and teahouses guide gives you more slow-walk choices after the holiday shows end.

Walk the riverside old streets in Dadukou

Yidu Ancient Town (义渡古镇) in Dadukou offers old streets and a riverfront walk. Plan an old-street afternoon away from the central shopping areas.

Save 义渡古镇 and 仁义街 in your map app before setting off. Give Dadukou a half day, including travel from your hotel. For a group visit, agree on a meeting spot near the main entrance and a meal time. Choose the snacks you want as you explore.

Enjoy fine craft and mountain landscapes indoors

Chongqing Art Museum (重庆美术馆) sits inside the bright red Guotai Arts Center right near Jiefangbei, making it an easy indoor stop on a central walking day. Its free craft exhibition runs through 15 November in halls 2 to 5. It gathers fine handmade items created with lacquer, woven fabric, metal, carved wood, polished stone, and ceramics. Pick one craft room that catches your eye and study its detailed textures.

Take Metro Line 2 to Linjiangmen station (临江门) and walk straight to the museum entrance at 1 Linjiang Road (临江路1号). Normal opening hours are 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30. The museum closes on Mondays outside announced holiday openings.

For a larger cultural trip, head to the Three Gorges Museum (重庆中国三峡博物馆), across the plaza from the People's Great Hall. Its sweeping landscape exhibition pairs classic scroll paintings, antique relics, and historic photographs to show how artists saw these misty mountains and wild rivers. This free exhibition runs through 17 January 2027. Normal museum hours are 09:00 to 17:00, with Monday closures outside holiday openings. The museums and history guide helps you plan that neighbourhood. Stick to one museum per half day, and save outdoor strolling for dry breaks in the weather.

Pick one riverbank for the evening

The remaining October Chongqing drone shows are scheduled for 24 and 31 October, from 20:30 to 20:50. The guide covers viewing areas and current show updates.

For a South Bank evening, explore Changjiahui Shopping Park (长嘉汇购物公园), eat nearby, and walk to the riverfront plaza. Take the Metro Ring Line to Danzishi station (弹子石). Allow time for the sloping walk from the station, and follow the open viewing routes on a show night.

If your hotel is in Jiefangbei, eat dinner downtown and take a short walk to Chaotianmen square to see the two rivers meet under the lights. Pick your chosen riverbank before choosing a restaurant, so your food, walking route, and subway ride all head in the same direction. Read our hotpot guide to help you pick your broth and ingredients.

Practical tips for October days

A downtown October day can begin at the art museum, pause for spicy noodles at lunch, wind through Mountain City Lane in the afternoon, and wrap up with dinner near your hotel. For a route through the centre's different street levels, follow the Chongqing 8D city walk. A South Bank day pairs old river lanes with an unhurried dinner and an evening walk by the Yangtze.

With children or relatives who tire on stairs, keep walking sections short and take taxis between districts. Map points that look close together can sit on separate vertical road levels. Solo travellers should save their hotel's Chinese address card and choose a clear street pickup point for cars. Our rainy day guide offers indoor backups for wet afternoons.
