December is a great month to explore Chongqing through quiet museums, comforting hotpot, and outdoor mineral baths. You can spend gentle days wandering between hillside viewpoints, soak in warm hot springs, or add an overnight mountain trip for winter snow.

Give your winter days an easy rhythm

December brings cool river air, quieter streets, and steaming food. Keep outdoor city walks to midday when temperatures feel mildest. Many neighborhoods feature steep stone steps, so take your time between stops. Wrap up your afternoons with bubbling hotpot or warm noodles near your hotel.

On clear evenings, stroll along the riverfront to admire the city lights against the dark water. When thick river mist rolls in, move indoors to explore covered shopping arcades and tea shops. Our best time to visit guide shows how winter fits into the wider yearly pattern.

Spend a day on art, history, and food

Start your morning at the Three Gorges Museum to explore ancient pottery, folk crafts, and river history. Because the museum is large, choose two or three main galleries rather than rushing through every floor. Show your original passport at the entrance for admission. Head to the fourth-floor Jingren Huaide Hall (景仁怀德厅) to view landscape paintings and cultural relics with mountain and river themes. When you step outside, the Great Hall of the People sits directly across the public square, offering an easy landmark photo before lunch.

Continue to the Chongqing Art Museum inside the Guotai Arts Center, located right next to the busy Jiefangbei clock tower. The building stands out with its bright red interlocking steel beams. Wander through Hall 6 to see Chinese paintings, oils, and sculptures collected from the Chinese Arts Festival. Afterward, explore the pedestrian streets around Jiefangbei for lunch, tea, or shopping.

Read our museum guide for planning details, and consult our rainy day guide if wet weather keeps you inside. Most major public museums close on Mondays, so schedule museum visits between Tuesday and Sunday.

Finish your evening around a hotpot table. Order a split metal pot (鸳鸯锅) with spicy chili broth on one side and mild mushroom or bone broth on the other. This setup lets everyone at the table choose their own spice level, making it ideal for children or anyone who prefers non-spicy food. Start with sliced beef, fresh mushrooms, and greens, dipping the cooked pieces in sesame oil and garlic. If you travel solo, look for restaurants offering individual single-burner pots or half-size dishes. Our hotpot guide explains how to order. For an indoor dinner show, check our immersive shows and banquets guide.

Spend a whole day at the hot springs

Tongjing Hot Springs in Beibei District combines warm outdoor mineral pools with natural river gorge views. You can spend the entire day soaking, resting, and enjoying a slow lunch. If you want added activity, the site also offers short river strolls, bamboo raft rides, and cave visits, which have separate on-site tickets and operating schedules.

To reach Tongjing, take metro Line 4 to Huangling station, then connect to bus 9106 directly to the entrance. Look for 统景温泉风景区 on map apps. Set aside a full day from central Chongqing to allow comfortable travel and soaking time.

Jingangbei: old lanes and a hot spring stay

Jingangbei Hot Spring Village offers a historic riverside setting. You can stroll along quiet flagstone lanes beside the Jialing River, drink tea inside restored tile-roof buildings, and soak in booked hot spring pools at the foot of Jinyun Mountain. To get there, take metro Line 6 to Beibei station, followed by a short taxi ride to 金刚碑·温泉老村. Because Tongjing and Jingangbei sit in different parts of the district, choose one destination for your hot spring day rather than trying to visit both.

Booking a hot spring hotel lets you relax without rushing back to the city in the evening. Our hot spring guide covers locker access, swimsuits, dining, and room choices.

Pick one mountain escape

Fairy Mountain: meadows and forest

Fairy Mountain in Wulong is the top choice for alpine meadows, pine forests, and seasonal snow activities. Search for Fairy Mountain National Forest Park, 仙女山国家森林公园. Take a train to Wulong South station, transfer by road to the Fairy Mountain tourist center, and board the shuttle into the park. The tourist center and the forest park entrance are separate stops.

Follow our two-day Wulong plan to manage transfers and book an overnight stay near the park. A single-day return from Chongqing leaves very little daylight after trains and mountain shuttles. If you also plan to walk through the giant stone bridges at the Three Natural Bridges, give each site its own day so you can rest your legs between climbs.

Jinfo Mountain in Nanchuan features steep cliff paths and a large hot spring resort near its base. Search for 金佛山 for the mountain park and 天星国际温泉城 for the hot spring area. Take a train to Nanchuan North, then arrange a local road transfer to the cable car entrance. Cable cars handle the main ascent, though summit trails still include stairs and hillside walkways.

If you prefer river gorge scenery over snowy heights, take an overnight Wushan red-leaf trip. The red-leaf season runs across November and December, displaying deep red and gold foliage along the high riverbanks.

Match your plan to your travel group

If you have three days in Chongqing, spend day one exploring museums and dining around Jiefangbei, day two soaking at a hot spring, and day three walking historic neighborhoods and river overlooks. If you want to visit Fairy Mountain or Jinfo Mountain, add two extra days to your stay. Our four- and five-day itinerary shows how to organize the extra nights.

When traveling with children or older adults, keep outdoor walking short and pick hot spring facilities with easy flat access. Historic stone lanes in Jingangbei and mountain parks feature outdoor stairs, so ask staff about routes with elevators or vehicle drop-off points before selecting your room or path.

Solo travelers can use a central hotel near a metro station as a reliable base for city walks and hot spring trips. If you visit Fairy Mountain or Jinfo Mountain, booking a direct small-group day bus avoids managing multiple train and shuttle connections on your own. Groups of friends and families can book a private vehicle with ample trunk space for winter coats and luggage.

Pack smart for cool winter weather

Pack a windproof jacket, warm fleece layers, a compact umbrella, a power bank, and shoes with solid grip for wet stone steps. Choose a hotel with adjustable in-room heating to stay comfortable at night. If you head into the mountains, bring thermal base layers, a thick down coat, gloves, and a warm hat.

For the hot springs, bring a swimsuit, pool slippers, dry clothes, and a waterproof bag for wet items. Bring a swim cap if your chosen venue requires one. Eat before changing into your swimsuit, or arrange a meal inside the resort dining areas.
