Give Wushan two days and one night for a bright autumn break. Ride the train from Chongqing, settle into town, and feast on famous local grilled fish for dinner. The next morning, board a boat through the Little Three Gorges before heading back. This pace gives you plenty of time to enjoy the river cliffs without rushing your connections.

Why visit Wushan in autumn?

Golden sunlight falls on the steep cliffs above the Yangtze River in Wu Gorge.

Wushan (巫山) sits right in the famous Three Gorges region. Here, steep forested mountains rise straight out of the water. During the autumn season, brilliant red and copper colors spread across the hillsides. A river boat gives you sweeping views of the cliffs and trees from below, while a path on the hillside lets you walk right beside the red leaves.

The usual leaf season is November to December, but trees turn red in stages. Color spreads along the river at different rates on different slopes. Pick your travel dates within this window, and check the latest local conditions before you make your final trip plans.

Build your trip around a boat journey, a short walk and Wushan grilled fish. These make a full autumn break, with room to add a festival event from the seasonal listing if it fits your dates.

Pick your boat trip on the water

For your first trip, choose the Little Three Gorges and Mini Three Gorges (小三峡·小小三峡) boat tour. This route sails up the narrow gorges of the Daning River and into a smaller side stream. The whole round trip takes about four hours. Set aside a full morning for it.

This boat ride is ideal if you want to sit back and gaze up at sheer rock walls. You can watch the steep cliffs change shape as the boat moves between wide bays and narrow gaps. Pack a warm jacket or fleece because the breeze on the open deck can feel brisk. Boarding the boat and changing to smaller craft requires walking along piers and ramps. Ask scenic staff about walkway conditions if anyone in your group struggles with stairs.

A different trip called the Wu Gorge and Goddess Peak boat route (一峡一峰) travels along the main Yangtze into Wu Gorge. Pick that option if your main goal is seeing the wide river canyon and the famous Goddess Peak rock formation. It has a separate timetable but departs from the same Little Three Gorges Visitor Center pier. Make sure to check the exact Chinese name on your ticket when you buy it.

Our two-day plan sticks to the Little Three Gorges. Save other river trips for a longer stay so you do not rush your morning on the water. If you want a multi-day voyage along the river, read our Yangtze cruise guide.

Book your train tickets and local rides

Search for Wushan, 巫山 on the official China Railway 12306 website or app. Check which Chongqing railway station your train leaves from, and leave early enough to cross town from your hotel. High-speed trains take about two hours, though specific runs vary slightly.

Wushan railway station (巫山站) sits up in the hills outside the town center, far from the river piers. When you get off the train, take a taxi or ride-hailing car straight to your hotel. This ride is the smoothest choice when rolling suitcases. Keep your hotel name and address saved in Chinese characters on your phone screen to show your driver.

When you head to the boat the next morning, set your taxi destination to Wushan Visitor Center (巫山游客中心) or Little Three Gorges Visitor Center (小三峡游客中心). Show the staff your booking screen so they direct you to the correct boarding gate. Both the drive from the train station and the morning ride to the pier take time, so build extra cushion into your schedule.

For local updates, check the 畅游巫山 and 微游巫山 mobile channels. You can call the Little Three Gorges scenic office at +86 23 5775 6666 for route questions. Check your departure slot, your expected return time, and your ticket details before you set out.

Book an afternoon return train with time for the boat's return, lunch, the drive to the station and station entry. Your train ticket shows the departure time, so reach the station before then.

Day one: arrive in town, stroll by the river and eat grilled fish

Catch a morning or midday train from Chongqing, then take a taxi into Wushan town. Stay at a hotel right in the town center so you are close to dinner spots and a quick ride from the morning pier. Remote hillside lodges look romantic, but they require extra driving and special car arrangements.

Once you check in and drop your bags, spend the afternoon on an easy riverfront stroll. Head to Ningjiangdu Ecological Park (宁江渡生态公园) to see where the waters meet between high mountain walls. The paths here offer open space and fresh river air. Keep this first outing gentle, leaving time to rest, drink tea, or head back to freshen up.

When evening comes, sit down for Wushan grilled fish (巫山烤鱼). This sizzling feast is a local specialty. The cooks roast a whole river fish over charcoal, set it in a wide metal tray of spicy broth, and simmer it with vegetables right at your table. Pick your fish type and flavor sauce before cooking starts. Tell the servers your preferred spice level, and ask if the price is charged per whole fish or by weight. Steamed rice, tofu skin, and leafy greens round out the tray nicely.

Two people or a small group can easily share one fish. If you travel solo, ask the staff for their smallest fish or single-portion option before ordering. If you cannot eat fish or spicy chilies, check our food allergy guide for helpful phrases to show the kitchen.

Day two: cruise the gorges and head home without stress

Eat an early breakfast, leave your heavy luggage with your hotel front desk, and take a quick taxi to the visitor center. Carry the original passport for the check at the turnstiles.

Dedicate your entire morning to the Little Three Gorges tour. Leave your rolling luggage at the hotel and carry just a light daypack. Gangways and transfer boats are much easier to navigate with your hands free. Pack drinking water, a light snack, a rain shell, and a portable phone charger for photos.

After the boat returns, have lunch in town and collect your bags from the hotel. Then take your ride to Wushan station. Choose a train that gives you time for each step.

This route works smoothly for solo travelers and couples who feel comfortable booking their own train tickets and hailing cabs. Small guided tour groups can follow the exact same rhythm.

Add an extra day for a hillside hike

If you want to hike among the colorful trees rather than watch them from the water, add a third day to your trip. You can head to Three Gorges Dragon Ridge (三峡龙脊) or the Wu Gorge Goddess Scenic Area (巫峡·神女景区).

Dragon Ridge features serious hiking trails with steep stair climbs and rugged hillside paths. This is a true mountain trek that requires hiring a car for drop-off and pickup. The Goddess Scenic Area offers towering clifftop views reached by a mix of shuttle buses, short paved walking paths, and scenic cable cars. Pick the single route that best matches how much your group likes to walk.

With children, make the boat the main event and add a short town walk. Leave time for rest breaks, and ask about the pier route and any steps before bringing a stroller. Our family travel guide helps with planning a day for young children.

Combine the red leaves with a wider Chongqing trip

A Wushan getaway fits smoothly into a broader Chongqing vacation. You can spend a couple of days eating street food downtown, exploring mountain museums, and relaxing on a hot spring afternoon. Our November guide highlights how Wushan red leaves match up against the golden ginkgo trees and forests of Nanchuan.

Remember to pack for chilly river winds and damp mountain trails, even if downtown Chongqing still feels warm. Grippy walking shoes, warm clothing layers, and a light waterproof jacket will keep you cozy on open boat decks and stone steps alike. Giving Wushan an overnight stay lets you savor the river mist, the fiery evening feast, and the autumn colors without feeling hurried.

Wushan red leaves and a gorge boat trip

November 2026 & December 2026

Bright red leaves on steep gorge cliffs are the main draw. Stay overnight, ride a boat along the river, and sit down for local Wushan grilled fish. Taking two days gives you a relaxing trip instead of a tiring rush back to the city.

Common questions

Which boat trip should I book for a first visit?

Choose Little Three Gorges and Mini Three Gorges (小三峡·小小三峡) for this two-day plan, and give it a full morning. The Wu Gorge and Goddess Peak boat route (一峡一峰) is a separate trip with a different schedule.

Can I walk from Wushan railway station to the boat pier?

No, you need a road ride. Wushan railway station sits high above town, while the visitor center and piers sit along the riverbank. Take a taxi or ride-hailing car to your town hotel first, then take a short cab ride to the pier in the morning.

Is the trip suitable for families or solo travelers?

Yes. Families can focus on the boat and a short town walk, with breaks for young children. Solo travelers can arrange trains and local rides at their own pace. Ask the boat crew about the boarding route if anyone needs step-free access.
