Plan November around one autumn escape, a day of local crafts, and steaming hot meals. Head south to Nanchuan for golden mountain trees, travel east to Wushan for two days beside red-leaf gorges, or head west to Rongchang for pottery and woven cloth.
Map · SightsPick your November trip
If you have three or four days, stay based in downtown Chongqing and pick one day trip outside the urban core. Solo travelers can take fast trains or join local day tours, while small groups can split a private van. Go south to Nanchuan (南川) for crisp mountain air and golden trees. Go west to Rongchang pottery and crafts for hands-on workshops with clay and handwoven cloth.
If you have five days or more, give Wushan autumn leaves two full days and one night. Take the high-speed train to Wushan and stay in town before a morning Little Three Gorges boat excursion. This route follows the Daning River between steep, colorful cliffs. Sleeping overnight in Wushan county gives you time for a fresh river fish dinner, a calm morning on the misty water, and a relaxed journey back.
Leaf colors change with height, location and weather. Use the seasonal listings on this page for current events and offers.
Start with art near Jiefangbei

Chongqing Art Museum (重庆美术馆) is an easy, sheltered city stop for a cool November morning. The building looks like a giant stack of red chopsticks inside the Guotai Arts Center, right in the Jiefangbei shopping area. Step inside to rest your legs from the steep streets and outdoor steps.
The Craft and Heritage exhibition runs through 15 November 2026 in halls 2–5. It brings together lacquerware, textiles, metalwork, wood, stone and ceramics. You can admire the woven surfaces, clay vessels and smooth lacquer finishes without needing to read every wall label. Later in the month, choose the museum’s collection exhibition in hall 6, running through 31 December 2026. Its Chinese paintings, oil paintings and sculptures make a varied indoor stop.
Give the Three Gorges Museum a separate morning. It sits near the Great Hall of the People in another part of Yuzhong district. The fourth-floor Jingren Huaide gallery has a free exhibition of donated landscape paintings, ceramics and other objects through 17 January 2027. Works on paper rotate every three months, so the display changes during its run. Our museum guide helps you choose the displays that interest you most.
A smooth city day keeps walking simple: spend two calm hours at the gallery, walk down a short flight of stone stairs for a hot bowl of spicy beef noodles, take an afternoon coffee break, and catch the river dusk before dinner. If November mist turns to cold rain, follow our rainy day route to connect covered malls, metro stations, and indoor viewpoints.
Pick one Nanchuan autumn landscape
Nanchuan offers two distinct outdoor settings. Pick one for a single day trip so you do not spend your entire day on the road.
Ginkgo Village (南川德隆镇银杏村) features ancient ginkgo trees spread across quiet stone lanes, farmhouses, and terraced hills. The usual window for golden leaves runs from mid-November into early December. Pick this spot for gentle walks, falling golden leaves, and a hearty country meal of smoked pork and fresh greens. The stone trails can get damp and slick, so walk carefully on outdoor steps.
Shanwangping Karst National Ecological Park (山王坪喀斯特国家生态公园) offers a dramatic forest landscape. A road splits the mountain ridge, with golden dawn redwoods on one side and deep green evergreen trees on the other. Walking trails lead through mossy limestone rocks and tall trees.
Both spots require road transport after you arrive in Nanchuan. Hire a private driver or join a small tour, and agree on the exact destination and pickup time before leaving Chongqing.
For a family trip, pick a short forest walk with time for lunch and rest. Keen walkers can take on longer park routes. Bring warm layers and sturdy shoes with good grip for damp mountain paths.
For autumn leaves within the city, choose Garden Expo Park (重庆园博园). Its lakeside gardens and stone bridges give you a shorter outing than a mountain day trip. Dawn redwoods, plane trees and maples bring autumn color in November and December.
Make Rongchang your craft day
Rongchang (荣昌) offers a change of pace: pottery workshops, grass cloth weaving, and lunch in a smaller town. Take a high-speed train to Rongchang North, then take a short taxi ride to your chosen craft area. Our intercity train guide explains ticket booking, station choices and boarding.
Choose Antao Pottery Town (安陶小镇) for clay studios and hands-on pottery throwing. Choose Grass Cloth Town (夏布小镇) to explore the craft of ramie cloth.
Ramie cloth comes from the tough stems of a nettle plant. Local weavers spin the plant fibers into fine yarn and weave them on wooden handlooms. The finished fabric is light, crisp, and breathable. A hand-stitched tea cloth, fan, or pouch fits easily into your day pack and travels home easily.
Book a workshop with the craft maker before setting your train schedule. Agree on what you can take home on the day, as clay pieces may need kiln firing and later shipping. Our Rongchang guide explains exact studio spots and transport.
Solo visitors can explore craft shops at their own pace. Groups and families do best with one morning workshop, a lunch of local Rongchang braised goose, and a relaxed stroll along the riverbanks.
Soak in a natural hot spring

After a cool day climbing stone stairs, soaking in a warm mineral pool is one of the best ways to end the day. November temperatures are mild, making outdoor baths comfortable without summer heat. Chongqing has natural hot springs both near the city and out in the hills.
Ronghui Hot Spring (融汇温泉) in Shapingba works well for a city stay with a quick afternoon soak. Tongjing Hot Spring (统景温泉) sits in a scenic rural valley and deserves a full day trip. Choose Jingangbei (金刚碑) in Beibei if you want to pair historic riverside village lanes with hot spring baths.
Our hot spring guide helps you choose between day-pass pool tickets and overnight hot spring hotels. Pack swimwear and leave ample time for bathing and dinner.
A four-day plan with one country outing
- Day one: Start in Jiefangbei. Follow the downhill 8D city walk toward the river, visit Chongqing Art Museum in the afternoon, and enjoy a warm hotpot dinner.
- Day two: Head out early for your chosen country outing. Pick Nanchuan for mountain forests and yellow ginkgo trees, or Rongchang for pottery and weaving.
- Day three: Take the metro to the Three Gorges Museum in the morning. Head to Ronghui Hot Spring or Jingangbei in the afternoon for a mineral bath.
- Day four: Enjoy a spicy bowl of Chongqing noodles for breakfast, take a morning walk through old streets and teahouses, and pick up local tea or woven crafts before heading to the train station or airport.
If you have two extra days, take the high-speed train east to Wushan. Stay overnight in town, wake up early, and take the Little Three Gorges boat excursion for autumn views of the narrow river cliffs.
Pack for city streets and cooler hills
Chongqing in November stays cool and cloudy, with frequent light mist and drizzle. The downtown core is sheltered, but mountain ridges and open boat decks feel much colder.
Pack clothing you can layer easily: a breathable base top, a warm fleece or sweater, and a windproof rain jacket. Carry a compact umbrella in your day pack. Walking shoes with textured rubber soles are essential, as damp stone steps and tiled walkways turn slippery quickly.
Plan one main scenic area per day to leave plenty of daylight for walking, meals, and road transfers. To see how November compares with the rest of the year, read our best time to visit guide.
